I don't think this is George Lucas' fault -- Considering Disney already reissued The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D a few years ago, even if on limited release. Its not the first time they do it.

Not satisfied with the brutal and incessant rape of our culture, history, and childhoods, Disney turned its eye on copyrighted material and outright stole much of The Lion King from Tezuka's seminal classic, and even touted their bastardized creation as Disney's "first completely original story."

After critics began to attack the obviously lifted film, Disney claimed similarities were coincidental and that the Lion Kind was "inspired" by Hamlet (begging the question, why then claim it to be "completely" original when it so obviously is not?)

Disney has done more to destroy artistic freedom with its legacy of abusing copyright through cutthroat political lobbying and malicious lawsuits than any other entity I can think of, and yet are far more guilty of artistic bankruptcy and outright cultural piracy than anyone they've ever sued...

Have you even seen "Kimba, the White Lion"? "Seminal classic", my arse. It was a minor cartoon that went nowhere, because it lacked most of the facets of cartoon art.

You might exactly as well say Shakespeare was guilty of brutal and incessant rape of Danish culture for plagiarizing the "Historia Danicae" when he wrote "Hamlet".

Disney is prone to grabbing somebody else's idea and claiming it as their own, as does every studio. But committing cultural rape by stealing a seminal work of art? Baloney.

I'm not defending it as an original work. It's even more a reworking of Hamlet.

But I cannot abide the hyperbolic contention that Disney committed any kind of infamous crime or that "Kimba, the White Lion" is a work of any artistic standing.

That's definitely not true. It's become somewhat of a taboo in recent years to plagiarize, but up until the 18th century there wasn't anything wrong with it. Just look at all the plagiarists, from MLK to Twain to Virgil to Shakespeare, sometimes it was unintentional, but a lot of those guys didn't even have the concept of ownership of ideas.

More recently, Warhol said something to the effect that good artists borrow, great artists steal.

I don't personally buy into it to that extent, but the whole notion of paying for art is completely ass backwards in my view.
