White Zombie ages rather well too.

Some metal is appaulingly dated and you can tell the era just from listening to how its mixed (kinda like how you can with 80s pop) but there's other stuff that's a lot more timeless and a lot less... distinctively dated

I don't think Gothic has aged badly, it was (and still is) full of awkward controls, but other games have aged far worse - Morrowind, being an example. Incredible game, but bludgeoned with the ugly stick.
That just sucked to begin with, massive hype, little substance. Yet to finish it, kept waiting for it to become semi decent.

You are correct. Quake was the game that got me switched over to keyboard+mouse rather than just keyboard, after I started playing online and got my ass handed to me time after time.

I still love Skies of Arcadia, that's a dream cast game that won't die, same for Marvel VS Capcom 2 and Rez. So your "every dreamcast game" list is fucking bullshit you goddamn trollin' noob

Goldeneye is a bad example, imho. I'm still playing the first 2D Prince of Persia for DOS and I still find it has a hell of a good level design....
3D games? Bungie's Oni (if you manage to make it run, the last time I tried I was on a WinME OS) still has an enjoyable, melee/weaponry hybrid combat system and above all an interesting story and a wonderful OST....

If you use one of the new engines like Tenebrae (which was abandoned years ago but can still be found), it actually looks surprisingly good.

Yep, you can, but you can't save the group for later use. And you still had to click on each individual of the up to four units, but after that you could move them as one. Worked okay for creating meat shields of knights to run ahead of the archers.
Most games that fit within the passable-but-not-stellar category of early 3D game technology have aged badly in my opinion. For example early FPS titles that weren't Doom or Quake. Redneck Rampage comes to mind - it's stull fun, sure, but mainly because of the redneck setting and different gameplay mechanics (farting, anyone?).
I'm also going to perform a cardinal sin and suggest that the M&M games haven't aged well at all, especially the ones in the 1-6 compilation found here. I tried playing M&M 3 and 4, just couldn't get into it at all. M&M 6 is slightly better but mainly due to the improved graphics. If you didn't play and love these games back in the day, they're very hard to enjoy now - especially when you can fire up Dragon Age instead.
