This is exactly the reason I hesitate to buy "golden oldies" on Steam when the come up. I would much rather buy them from GoG. With GoG, you have the advantages of knowing:
1) You will not have compatibility issues with your current machine or OS;
2) You will have good customer support if you encounter any problems at all;
3) You won't have to deal with DRM of any sort;
4) You can install your game on any computer, any time you wish;
5) You will have any and all add-ons and extras it is possible to get.
In addition, GoG is almost always cheaper than Steam.
There are still plenty of classic PC games out there that haven't made it to GoG, yet (Monkey Island series, anyone?), but with each new developer who comes on board, the possibility of seeing your favorite games on this site increases. That's why I hesitate to buy my older games anywhere else.
Regarding Aliens Vs. Predator, one of the guys that was on the original developing team (SirLemonHead) has taken the time to make a port of the old executeable. The result is an AvP.exe which will run on today's hardware without all the bugs that plagued the original release. If you've been unable to play your AvP Gold because you have an Nvidia card, go to this forum page (http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/tech_support/b49029/19799417/p21) and click on the link to the "latest test version." From there, you can download the "MyAvP.exe" file and replace your executeable.
Game on!
