Throwing my two cents into the discussion. As a "game" FF7 was mediocre at best, same with almost all JRPG's. Repetitive grinding for a single player game.
What makes most of them worth playing is the story line. Personally I felt that FF7 didn't bring anything major to the table, story wise, that 1-6 didn't already do. The reason that most people like it best is that it was the first JRPG they played, so the story was new and fresh for them and at the time the graphics were amazing (at least for 3D I still preferred the look of sprites at the time).
So no, FF7 wasn't a great/amazing game, but it does have a VERY strong nostalgia factor for a lot of people.
