Throwing my two cents into the discussion. As a "game" FF7 was mediocre at best, same with almost all JRPG's. Repetitive grinding for a single player game.

What makes most of them worth playing is the story line. Personally I felt that FF7 didn't bring anything major to the table, story wise, that 1-6 didn't already do. The reason that most people like it best is that it was the first JRPG they played, so the story was new and fresh for them and at the time the graphics were amazing (at least for 3D I still preferred the look of sprites at the time).

So no, FF7 wasn't a great/amazing game, but it does have a VERY strong nostalgia factor for a lot of people.
Well already dragon age 1 is overhyped and i wouldn't even dare to compare with P:T or BG 2. And well RTS, they are more of the same which has been done before. And no they are not all like starcraft but it's more of the same. Well in RPG's i mean even to consider Bethesda as a producer of good RPG's i have no idea. Even morrowind i considered not as good and overhyped as well. Gothic 2 wins over morrowind anyday but tthis is also a personal taste. And GTA ? I played once GTA Vice city and i thought it is not big deal the music and driving around with the car was oki but the rest is just (It all has been done before and better too....)
Final Fantasy VII has aged pretty badly and is not really fun at all to play now. While that may not be an issue for some JRPGs, an interesting and compelling story is sometimes enough to keep me playing, FF7 is completely devoid of even that. It really pales in comparison to other RPGs that Square have made, other JRPGs released after FF7 and even some before it such as Earthbound.

Read again, I never said that - quite the opposite.
as RTS: TA, Earth 2150 and Supcom where quite unique. Earth 2160 and Supcom2 converselymoved very far into Starcraft`s direction.

Supcom quite unique ?

Here you have TOTAL Annihilation. Yet again it has been done before and better too :)
I have checked now a lot more gameplay videos of FF 7 and i still think that this game is way overhyped. And yes it was all in english that is not the point. I think that this game is pretty shallow and the gameplay isn't that good. Almost every average west RPG is better than this game. Pretty disappointing......

SC is an evolution of TA, one of the things I immediately liked was the removal of tedious micromanagement. For example, queued structures can be moved so you don't need to interrupt build orders, guarding a structure also causes a unit to rebuild it to its original state if destroyed, queueable upgrades vs needing to build seperate advanced labs, factory build patterns that can be set to repeat, base templates etc.

That's just one aspect that was improved. I could write an essay on the progression between Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander\Forged Alliance.

It really depends on the player.
I love micromanagement and this is really not good in supcom.
But this is just personal taste for sure. You see it is an improvement i see it as not so good. It's not easy to get the taste of every gamer :)

Oh, I forgot to mention the UI, I hated having to click through menus of just 6 units\structures after playing Forged Alliance for so long. :p

I don't mind microing in a turn based\slower paced strategy game so much (eg Total War, Civilisation) but in real time it's a pain. Repeated mouse clicking isn't good for one's wrist either.

Good argument but i really liked especially in fast RTS games to micro, but it really is personal taste. And well civ is a good game but i found it always a bit too overhyped and i always like Master of Orion 2 more but it is again personal taste ^^

Can't say I agree, I've been playing it on my PS3 for the few weeks now, and I think it's still as fresh as it was back in 2001 when I first played it on PSOne.

slash11: P:T
BG 2
Gothic 1+2
Wizardry 8
Might&Magic 1-7
Ultima 7
I don't see much benefit in comparing Final Fantasy VII to any of those games.

I love Might & Magic. I also love Earthbound. They are completely different games, and I love them for completely different reasons.
Final Fantasy VII arrived on Steam.
