StingingVelvet: ...or pause and play tactical RPGs...
avatar
Metro09: That a good thing, in my opinion. I find pause-and-play to be a horribly awkward mechanic. While I'd like to see more good turn-based games if it's a choice between queue/pause and action, I'll take the action any day.
Well good for you, but obviously many people disagree. I don't like RTS games but I don't go around trying to get Starcraft turned into a shooter.

Putting aside Starcraft: Ghost for the moment, nobody's turning anything into anything else. This is not Baldur's Gate 3*; it's not even a spinoff of any existing series**. It's just another game set in the Forgotten Realms, and we've been getting those for 25 years.

I want more turn-based RPGs, too, but I don't see why we should demand that this particular game be a turn-based RPG just because it's got the D&D name. Look at VtM: Bloodlines. Hell, look at Mechwarrior. How often do you hear complaints that those games should have been turn-based on hex grids? Fans of those tabletop games have a lot more room to complain about the lack of faithful adaptations than D&D fans, but the games in question are still pretty awesome, even if they weren't what the hardcore tabletop fans were hoping for. Even Warhammer's multiple recent releases haven't hit that mark yet, as far as I know.

* Quite frankly, I think the Infinity engine was a waste of the D&D ruleset in the first place.

** Even if it was, I don't have a problem with spinoffs exploring different game mechanics (see Dark Messiah, Heroes of Might and Magic, or Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light), provided that it's made clear that they are spinoffs and not continuations of the core series. I encourage it, in fact.

It probably helps that playing MW or VtM is like freebasing gaming crack, so it's hard to complain. :D

I think GoL is the actual, planned future of the Lara Croft franchise. It was 600 points yesterday on Live, I think the deal is still up if anyone wants to pick up a decent co-op platformer (decent, not spectacular).

Is it? They're also making another core Tomb Raider, though.

Well, I never liked Tomb Raider but I am very interested in the reboot. Finally, a REAL chick. Not some pimped up wank fantasy chick that can do impossible stunts (especially with these basketballs clapping around her) and everything I've read sounds superb.

Sometimes you have to adapt to survive. (Figuratively and literally).

That's one thing that many governments fail to comprehend. Spoon in their mouth old farts DO NOT know everything. 100 years ago when education was for the supremely rich and famous, maybe, but not now. *shrugs*

Same goes for everything really.
Game is out on PC, but only in a box for now as far as I can tell. I got mine from amazon, arrived from UPS today.

Game is exactly what you expect it to be, a mindless budget hack n' slash dungeon crawler with the words Dungeons & Dragons slapped on it. That said you can at least pick feats and have some modicum of character control.

Despite using Steamworks it's not available on Steam yet AND it used fucking Gamespy for multiplayer, which is mind-boggling. I'm playing solo anyway so who cares. Graphics are actually decent for a budget title, though textures are terrible. The game has no in-game support for 16:10, which is also mind-boggling, but a simple ini edit gets 1920x1200 working.

So... it's what it is and was obviously going to be.

Do you recommend buying it? I enjoy games like Torchlight, Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege.

I haven't played far enough to make a recommendation yet, but I'll post again soon.

I can say right away though that this game, despite playing just like the ones you listed, controls with WASD and not mouse clicks.
I was very unimpressed with the demo. It didn't feel much like D&D even.

Dull, is what I'd call it.

Let us know what the whole playthrough is like.
Seriously "Daggerdale"? Is that located just off "SharpWeaponsville", in the region of "BigFu*&!ngAxeLand".

Hey just because I bought it doesn't mean I'm going to play it!

Forgotten Realms, near the Sword Coast, duh!

Okay, so you and I have that in common.

To be embarrassingly honest I mostly bought it because it came in a box. If it popped up on Steam exclusively for $15 I would have waited for a sale.

Do you think less of me?
