never played #1, but #2 was ok from a game mechanics point of view but kinda dog shitty when it came to bugs ... but it was one of the last dedicated PC games published by M$ so no real surprise that it had poor QA.

I tried to re-play it back when DS3 came out (had to use a pirated CD key despite having the original install disks, I lost the manual with the CD key printed in it) but the game was hardly functional on modern equipment, offered no native widescreen support, and the community made widescreen patch nuked the game into a unplayable state.

I'd probably buy it if it got some of that "lookie, it works now!" GOG magic rubbed on it ... I mean shit, so long as GOG could get it to run it still wouldn't be half as bad as Two Worlds.

StingingVelvet: I question the sanity of anyone desperate for these games.
I loved Dungeon Siege back in the day, it was a good slash em up RPG with very discrete classes that nonetheless allowed for both fun gameplay and somewhat tactical fights (it's not in vain that they choose this games RPG system to fan remake some Ultima titles, though for the most part it was just hacking around I can admit), and prided itself in lots and lots of loot. Also, the music was awesome..

The sequel was even better, it did away with the preposterous linearity of the first one, added classes, added special "powers", fleshed out your companions, and tried to have a real storyline (ie. more than just an excuse plot like DSI). All in all, it was very good.

I recently started DSIII (Obsidian + a decent RPG franchise? I'm in!!). And it's awful. It destroyed the original's system (even Bethesda was wise enough to retain Fallout's SPECIAL) , the character menu is completely nonfunctional, it added GUNS (really now?), it has premade characters and as far as I can see NONE OF THEM are archers, it has savepoints (What's this? A console title?? Oh, oh, yeah...) and I'm gonna stop raging now.

I loved Dungeon Siege, but never played any more than that. Since it's a Microsoft IP, I would expect it to show up on Games For Windows Live, not GOG. We can hope, though!

read the thread, Square Enix bought up the IP so it's actually out of Miscorsoft's hands now.

*edit* well, I guess firstly it was Take Two who bought the IP from Microsoft, then Squenix bought it from Take Two.

Oh, that's right! I completely forgot about that! There's some hope, then!
Lexor's really let his guard down recently. This is what happens. You give an inch, they take a capital letter.

treedoor: I just hope some deal can be struck.

I'm not really the "pirate" type when it comes to gaming only when there are literally no alternatives, but GoG is here now, and with some work can be that alternative for every game I ever want to play.

PenutBrittle: Whoa whoa whoa. There is an alternative. I just bought the complete pack on Steam for ten bucks during a sale. Even if you don't like DS3 (which I think is decent but not on par with the originals) ten bucks for both games is pretty great.

The expansions would be nice though.
I already stated in my OP that that is NOT an option for me.

I was too disturbed at just how much DS3 destroyed the Dungeon Siege franchise that I will NOT support it because it may give SE the wrong idea that I actually like the game.

I will, however, support the purchase of Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 (by their lonesome)
I'm lucky enough to have the originals plus the expansions and I installed them recently on Win 7.

Just a fyi, it doesnt work out of the box on win 7, I found this post very helpful, it may be of use to someone here too :)

Treedor, I'd just buy hardcopies. Looking at Amazon, you can get DSII for ~$13, the expnsion for ~$4, and the all in one edition of DS + SoA for ~$7.

Now that's not free, but it's not expensive - it's about what they'd cost on GOG, especially if DSII were counted as a "newer" game.

I just bought them that way late last year, installed them on my Win7x64 laptop, and with minimal rweaking, they run fine.

So go on, treat your self for your birthday. No paying the devs of DSIII required.

I think the Steam ones do come with the expansions, it's just kind of hard to tell. When you run Dungeon Siege 1 on Windows 7 it comes up with the Program Compatibility Assistant which calls the game "Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna". And in Dungeon Siege 2 the version number is 2.30, which is the version for the Broken World expansion (Dungeon Siege 2 by itself is 2.20 according to wikipedia). I haven't played the games properly yet so haven't checked anything beyond that.

Hmm. The Steam forums seem pretty adamant that it's just the main games, no addons. I've heard that the Steam versions have the multiplayer edited out, so perhaps there could be additional messing around that removed the expansions. Still, it's worth checking out. Thanks!

That's possible, but I hope not. I like having the complete versions of all games I get. Well, the Dungeon Siege games are on my to-do list, so I guess I'll be finding out for sure sometime in the nearish future.

Yeah, I'm normally really obsessed with having the Complete Edition for everything too. For Dungeon Siege I just sort of decided screw it, because it was only ten dollars and I don't really care about multiplayer. I just really wanted to play the Ultima V mod.

I DID buy a hard copy, and when it got to me the CD was messed up, and I couldn't install.
I'm sorry, but I've decided that this thread needs more support
