Now I can understand why the first one could be an aquired taste but Dune 2 should really be showing up here pretty quick! Anybody second that idea? Does anyone protest? Share ya thoughts!

Well I stand corrected. XD And thanks for the links cogadh. ^_^;;
Yeah but they should get a modificaton that you can select multiple units and create a box to select them.

Always pressing the single units and pressing the quick buttons is kind of a pain in the ass.

Check out Dune 2 - Legacy. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I'm planning to once GOG releases the game. I hated the interface even back then.
Given that the movie rights to Dune (on which the games were based) belong to Universal Pictures, the situation there is likely to be rather tricky.

Even worse, the literary rights to the estate of Frank Herbert belong to the Trident Media Group, who I hear are absolute bastards to deal with, and they would probably also have claims arising from any republication of the games, as they own many of the Dune-related trademarks.

So I don't see a rerelease of Dune or Dune 2 happening really. EA only owns the rights to the Dune 2 game itself, not to Dune 1 (which is in limbo, being the property of Avalon Interactive, which has since gone bust) or the Dune trademarks.

I'm sure it's held up in rights because Dune belongs to Frank Herbert's estate, so they would have to get the estate's permission to run the games. I agree Dune II would be nice here, as it is a vital part of gaming history, since it was the predecessor to Command And Conquer, and it was one of the first major RTS games.
Swallowed whole by the Sandworm till GoG pulls it out and saves it.
It is really sad that pirated copies are sometimes the only way to preserve classic titles from oblivion. I have no moral trouble admitting I have a collection of pirated oldies to enjoy until I can properly purchase them (the last one being "legalized" was Syndicate by the way, thanks GOG).

Ya darn legal complications...But oh well. Ya I do agree with most of you that the controls were a little....awkward even though it is one of the first. I remember I got too the point of using cement blocks and turrets too build my way into the enemy base. lol!

That's awesome. I remember getting stuck on a level where all I had left was turrets and a base. It's been oh so long since I've played! Even when it shows up here, I will still pine for the Genesis version.

It's interesting that the legal complications make it so tough.. I mean Westwood made Dune games all the way to Emperor, so it shouldn't be impossible.

Thank you, and everyone else for demanding Dune!
Speaking of building into bases...what was everyone elses strategy for Dune 2? Ya get creative or just send en mass (well as about as "en mass" as clicking one unit at a time can be)?

Well, I don't remember it all that well (the last time I played was between 7-10 years old), but I do remember a few things. Some of it was common to RTS, of course. I would drive over all of the rocket infantry with quads, I would send in decoy quads or trikes to attract the enemies massing troops, so that I could lessen their numbers or send a quick flanking counter, I built largely ineffective Sonic tank squads (just because they were so cool -- I would usually end up hitting myself eventually), and I would make ultimate defense systems... which would squander my resources... I think one of the last things I was trying to do was figure out how to make as few turrets as possible so that I could get my base to do most of the killing without overspending on one of the last missions... never succeeded yet, 12 years of unplayed Dune 2 later. Occasionally I would reposition bases, but I don't remember if I was ever successful.
I would send an Construction rig out too build a small base on a patch that snaked its way into the enemy base...and there was one out there out there usually. Then it was just a process of building concrete slabs into the enemies base and building turrets all over the place. I mostly built a few tanks too defend my Harvesters...Thats about it. XD
