Raptomex: Preordered the balls of steel edition. Picked it up today. It feels like it should have been released last gen. And it looks like polished Doom 3 graphics.
avatar
doccarnby: It is using Unreal Engine 2. A bit of polish, but it's still UE2.
Yeah. But still. Reminds me alot of Doom 3 for some reason.
Just played the alien "rape" stuff that has Jim Sterling and others in a huff... it's nowhere near that bad, it's nothing. It's making fun of Alien and movies like that the same as the original did, only now the girls make stupid comments. It's "rape" in that alien eggs are put down their throats like in Alien. Big whoop.

Game is awesome.

Right, I was pointing out that the engine it uses came out around the same time, so it would look somewhat similar. Also, I'm going to point out that it should have come out 2 generations ago.

TheCheese33: So has GameRager even started the game? It seems like he's spending all of his time criticizing people for not liking what they've seen of the game (and in some cases, what they've played).
He can be a nice guy, but he does suffer from a bad case of Fanboy Disease:He often seems to decide that he is going to love something before he has a chance to play it.

The girls make jokes about roofies and "too many jaegerbombs". 3D Realms didn't just know the date rape implications, they actually played it up. Defend it as a rape joke if you want, but it's pretty much impossible to pretend it isn't one, they knew what they were doing (this is even more obvious if you read the art book that comes with the Balls of Steel edition).

Perhaps, but I've seen the same sort of thing from people on the other side as well. Deciding that it's crap before the final version has even been released, then refusing to acknowledge that it might not be garbage.

For his part GR has been far more reasonable about it than the trolls on the other side. There have been at least a few people that disliked the game that haven't been trolling, but there's been a couple in particular that had made up their mind prior to the release that the game would be crap, and failed to bother to read any posts that were more open minded.

I'm not sure if that means that they pirated the game prior to release or they were just full of it, but either way it wasn't particularly helpful to me in deciding whether or not to cancel my preorder.

Personally, I'm glad I didn't because it's actually got some innovation in places and so far the game has been a lot more fun than it has any right to be.

predcon: Okay, so I just installed from a disc, and I still have to download another +400MB. The same thing happened with Brink, and as far as I know, there aren't any 0day patches. Is this some kinda anti-piracy measure?
avatar
StingingVelvet: Yes.

Metro 2033 made you download more than a GB.
I installed Metro 2033 from a disc, too. I thought that GB was just a backlog of patches or something.

@Gersen

My "people expected" comment wasn't directed at you personally. If it doesn't apply to you, than don't say anything about it. It's not all about you.

I've been looking through the concept art book, looking at some of the cut villains and sidekicks, like Negaduke and Dr. Proton, and this Bombshell chick. Remember how Halloween Harry was once touted as Duke's twin, separated at birth? (And then Duke got an FPS game, and Harry didn't, and the analogies ceased). Someone keep an eye out for mention of Space Station Liberty or something.

I haven't yet gotten to those jokes, but with the roofies, you've got a point. Jaegerbombs, I'm not so sure. I tend to agree with you that the joke is in the same category, I'm just very much aware that typically it depends a great deal on the gender of the individual that's had too many as to whether or not it elicits that reaction.

Oh they definitely play it off like a date rape joke, yes. The point is it's still an Alien parody, it's still not graphic or actual rape. When I read Sterling's comments I thought it sounded horrible but having actually played it now it was no big deal in context.
Jaegermeister is awful, like liquid licorice. I'm amazed at how much attention this game is getting for it's "insensitivity", and how other mainstream entertainment delivers just as much "anti-groupofyourchoice" humour and no one bats an eye. Like, Tosh.0 or Reno911!. Daniel Tosh has delivered at least one rape joke per show, and everyone loves him. The point being that the setting presented in the game is not meant to be taken seriously.

It wasn't long ago everyone was defending GTA for just about every offense imaginable, but then the chief prosecutor was Jack Thompson. Good God! Can you imagine the shitstorm he'd raise over this? I mean, he's already locked horns with 2K Games before, and lost...

I haven't played DNF, and probably won't for at least about a year when I can get it on the cheap somewhere. I don't know whats all in it from a moral standpoint, but, there is always someone railing against computer games and blaming it for all the 'problem' children and young adults. I say to these people turn on the movies of today and tell me which is worse games or movies? Pretty sure its movies by a landslide, in fact positive. People who commit crimes do not do it because a game had criminal acts in it.
There are now close to 7 billion people in this world. We are like a vast herd of tuna, some of which have bad attitudes and like to bite the fins off of others because they are there and it makes them feel better.
People who blame computer games for 'ruining' our children, should realize that a person's behavior begins with the parents. Starting from genetics to upbringing, and some parents are quite lousy. Further not all of us were born blessed with wealth, status, physical perfection, honest friends, or overly high IQ's. Games are not the cause of crime, in fact, games help stop crimes because they are so fun and addicting and gamers don't have time to go out and do wrong.
So everyone lets here it for games, including DNF for saving our society from crumbling into anarchy and vice! Here here!
Tuna 5.7 Billion out =)
(that's just my 2 cents to all the people who want computer games outlawed, nobody here I'm sure;))
So I decided to pull up my shorts and wade through some more of this awful shit. The last bit I played involved finding a condom, a dildo, and a bag of popcorn (which I had to cook in the microwave). There was absolutely no point to this, and I was rewarded with one of the most awkward lap dances in video game history.

Honestly, I wouldn't even recommend playing this game for free. Yes; it's that bad.

People like Tosh.0? I thought everyone realized he was an untalented piece of shit.
The point isn't that the game is making an "offensive" joke, it's that the game is completely tone deaf about it. Saints Row 2 has more "offensive" shit in any given half hour of gameplay than this has in its entire playtime, but its jokes actually have punchlines and are consistent with the atmosphere. Duke Nukem Forever's jokes barely have punchlines, so when they're base they just feel stupid, and when they're "offensive" they just feel mean-spirited.

It's the difference between Louis CK's gay jokes and Tracy Morgan's gay jokes, they're both trying to be edgy but one is clear about where he's coming from and the other just kind of sounds like an asshole.

Also, Daniel Tosh is a douchebag.

Nobody is coming at this from a "think of the children" perspective. Calling George Broussard an asshole who (at best) can't tell a joke to save his life and (at worst) has some serious issues with women is not the same as asking the game to be taken off the market or whatever.

Broussard is free to make and release his game, but I'm free to say he seems like a creep.

As much as you and some reviewers act like this is an obvious conclusion though it is actually quite subjective. Personally I thought Saint's Row 2 was pretty disgusting and more obnoxious than funny, but Duke has me laughing my ass off.
