Hey peeps,

For... er... legal reasons, I know someone who cannot use a normal computer and cannot use any Internet-capable device. Moreover, he's on house arrest for the next eternity. He can't use any current or previous gen systems. He loves old-school and new, and he has tons of old stuff. What he lacks is new stuff.

He used to love playing things like Resident Evil (he's played 1-5) and Left4Dead 1 and 2.

Over the next year, I plan to build him a super-arcade machine. I plan to use computer parts, solder off all of the Internet-able parts, and give him the machine preloaded with a ton of great DRM-free software.

In the end, it will look more or less like an XBOX where you just pop in the HDMI cable and it'll have a few USB-XBOX controllers and a wireless mouse and keyboard (I think I have to hard-wire them into the machine's USB ports).

So, my question to you all: What are some superb DRM-free modern shooters that he can play?

Thanks! I'll bookmark this and come back to it when the project is nearing completion so that I can buy all the licenses I need for the machine.
Right, DRM-free FPS games...
I will check, but I have heard that if you copy Half-Life 2 games out of the Steam directory, they will work as standalone copies. If you are interested, I will check for you by installing them on my computer and copying them over to another one, then I'll try to boot them up (it'll take me up to week with my current time constraints). If you're not interested in giving Valve money, I'll just carry on by saying:

Shadow Warrior. Yeah, the new one. I can safely say that it's one of the best first person shooters I have played in ages, it can be fully controlled via an xbox controller, and is a very skill-based game, so it also has a solid replay value.

The new Rise of the Triad. Personally I didn't like it all that much, but a lot of people seemed to, sooo... Yeah.

I'm not sure how far do you want do go in the old school department, but the original Doom 3 should be DRM-free too as far as I know (well, secured by a CD-key) - it might be worth checking on that one tho.

Other than that... Hm. It seems most of the good modern FPS games are Steamworks currently.
DRM-free Shooter...

Charles Whitman?
Oh right, Far Cry 2! I think it supports a controller as well and I found it absolutely amazing, lost a good amount of time with that game. Definitely recommended.

It's DRM-free both here and on Steam.

While I have enjoyed chaser, just beware of it - it has enemies that have reaction times of Gods of Asgard and are going to instantly shoot any bit of you that happens to appear in their range.

lol true, that is why you depend a lot of the bullet time ability, still a very fun game and the campaign if I dont remember wrong was fairly good in terms of length, very weird in most fps this days
Serious Sam?

Not very modern maybe?

Might as well throw in Painkiller while you're at it.

Yeah, both of them are very recomendable.
All right, I have downloaded Half-Life 2, launched it, copied it out of Steam's folder on a USB stick, copied it over on my laptop, cut my it from the internet, and HL2 runs absolutely fine. I could check the episodes for you as well if you'd want me to.
Kingping
Blood 1
Blood 2
Painkiller
shadow warrior (2013) (is very good remake of the old shadow warrior)
Deus ex 1
Deus ex 2
Redneck rampage
Duke franchise

Thanks for these recommendations.

I have Half Life 2, so I can try that out on my own. Thank you for the tip.

Oh my. Thanks for doing all that Fenixp! I also have the episodes, so I'll take care of that on my own, too. Thanks for working on it for me!

I'll definitely have a lot of classics on the machine, too. I know I can get stuff here on GOG, but I was having a tough time identifying modern FPSes that were DRM free.

I should note that it could use a serial number or something like that. It just can't need a CD or Internet connection.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

Oh, right, now looking at the sale - chronicles of riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. It includes the original Chronicles of Riddick and is absolutely amazing first person shooter-y thing.
