I own and have played a lot of both, and I'm telling you absolutely, get both!
But for now, if you have to choose...no, I don't know. They're both amazing. :)
Either would be great and you would not feel bad about getting either if you love Gothic and BG/NWN.
The Risen demo I guess I could understand if people don't like it. But like Dragon Age, it's got a lot of depth that only unfolds after quite a few hours of playtime, then you're hooked. Anyway, the game is beautiful and it is Gothic through and through, just with BEAUTIFUL visuals, improved combat, etc etc. There's not much else to say -- if you love Gothic, you need Risen.
Dragon Age surprised the hell out of me. I went in thinking I might not like it but I'm severely addicted. Everything is great: story, VA, music, dialogue (very well written, believable, and funny at times), etc. Combat is the real highlight for me. Some people dont like it I guess, but I cant get enough. I find it kinda combines multiple genres -- strategy, hack n slash, RPG, RTS, tactical, etc. Ever played Shining Force II? Imagine the turn-based style of that where you have to carefully consider each move with the real-time style of Baldur's Gate and the like. You'll be pausing fairly often, planning tactics, etc. If it sounds like your thing, dive in. It's addictive as hell. The DLC you don't really have to worry about -- I've made use of all of it and haven't found any of it essential. Plus, as for the storage thing, there's a good mod already for that. :)
(Regarding complaints: ignore hype, shit talk, etc. DA is just a damn good game and that's all there is to it.)
Both games have command console and mods.
Get both!! :)

WBGhiro: I'm more inclined on buying DA:O since i read great things about it in the thread that was around some time, also there's blood, sex and boobies (yay!), but i'm kinda put off by the whole DLC business.

Aliasalpha: Well DA:O is easily the best RPG I've played in years and I'd recommend it to pretty much anyone. I've not looked at the bioware forums for a while but the problematic DLC issues seemed to be dying down the last time I looked (and were pretty much exclusive to the PC). You don't seem to miss out on much if you choose to avoid the DLC. Personally I enjoyed the Wardens Keep addon, it wasn't huge but it had a decent chunk of content including new dialogue from all the main characters (at least all the ones I took there) and wasn't too expensive
In all fairness I do have to point out that the boobies in question are covered by a bra. A rather odd one in the case of morrigan, you see more skin when she's clothed...
On the up side, there's 4 romance options including 2 bisexual ones, 4 endings, lots of characters to recruit including a rather fun dog, some brilliantly amusing inter-party banter as you're walking around (anything involving morrigan is good, especially her vs alistair or her vs the dog) and a hot french redhead talking about caramel pudding in a distinctly sexual context.

question.... I have DAO for PC and for PS3 I got the ps3 copy 1st as the PX had one before my Amazon order got here for the PC.... Currently im out in the boonies with just my laptop... I guess my question is, which do you guys think is a better version? I dont want to play it on both systems, and anyone play it for the ps3 and computer?
Im headin back to my base tonight, so both copies should be awaiting me..
Just finished Dragon Age and my vote goes to Dragon Age. I played Risen demo but don't like it. Maybe I can buy it if it will be $10 or so. Or you can wait for Divinity 2 too.

Probably depends on your PC. I've heard the PS3 version has stability and framerate issues but then I've heard that about pretty much every game I've ever played and rarely encountered them
Frankly I think if you own both you should play both. Do the PS3 version for your good guy playthroughs and the PC for the bad guy ones & mods

Yeah, just started a dwarven commoner rogue, sadly, im never good at being evil... I try... and yet even in games I cant end up evil :)
Oooh in this game evil is FUN. I've just done something that might cause a major difference in the later game and it was something I assumed I'd have been railroaded into as a part of a main quest

WBGhiro: So i'm looking forward to buy me a christmas present (and of course a lot of GOG games) and just can't decide between these two, i love both gothic and Neverwinter Nights2/Kotor 2 stiled games.

on the other hand Risen seems to be another awesome gothic game but it seems there aren't many people talking about it, so i'm afraid it's another mediocre Gothic 3 sequel.
If you have any experience with these games please share it.

You really shouldent listn to ANYONE who does the whole "I only played the demo.." thing.
The demo really stops just as things START to pick up.
Just letting you know ; )

Zeewolf: I loved both. Dragon Age: Origins is much more traditional, in the sense that it's a party-based game with tactical combat, clearly defined classes, et.c. The questlines are linear, but you can tackle most of them in any order you want, which makes it a bit more open than many other games of the same kind. Navigation is done through a world map, so it's not one seamless world.
Risen is more action-oriented. It has direct control over one guy, and fighting is done kind of like in a third person action game. It's also an open world-game where you navigate through a seamless world with virtually no loading, even when you enter buildings and dungeons. You can go wherever you want (though like the Gothic-games, you can expect to get your arse kicked if you explore the "wrong" parts of the map at an early level. The main story is linear, but there are many sidequests.
Both are quite challenging RPGs and very successful at what they try to do. Dragon Age has the edge in terms of storytelling, whereas Risen has more interesting dungeons and such. In Dragon Age, it was largely the story that really pulled me in, and in Risen it was the exploration itself that hooked me.

This man absolutely nailed it.
Risen is 10/10 for its world and exploration aspect. It is amazing.
Dragon Age is 10/10 for its story, party, dialogues and tactical combat aspects. It is also amazing.
So it boils down to what you like more in RPGs - focus on story, or on exploration.I would definitely get both.It is not that ofter that we get two awesome RPGs of different styles in the same time.
Hey thanks for taking the time and giving me these great answers, i think i'm going with DA:O and get Risen when it's cheaper.
Just another question is the NPC interaction in risen like in gothic I or II (while some are a bit dull, there are also lots of "hidden" witty lines and such)?

yeah i remember the gothic II demo which was pretty "modest" too, but the game+expansion was one of the best gaming experiences i ever had.
Thaks again for your time, i really love the GOG community.
Dragon Age: Origins Digital Deluxe Edition is now only €23.28 on G2Play so at that price you can have all the DLC and its far cheaper than Risen.

Thanks man that would make everything easier.
so to get this straight i get a key from them and i can use it to download DA:O from the ea gamestore? are there any DRm or other stuff i should be aware of?
EDIT: also how long will it be on sale i couldn't find any date.

G2Play don't have any sales that their standard retail price. They buy CD-Keys from cheap regions like Eastern Europe and Singapore and then sell them to us. You get a key you download the EA Download manager and just register the key as a retail key. I've had 5 games off them and none have ever been any trouble. Even bought NFS: Shift for €19.99. As for DRM there is usually SecuROM but it's disabled for the Download manager so the only DRM is the Download manager itself which is no worse then Steam IMO.

That's the same, too. Some of it really makes me crack up. :)
The dialogue is probably a bit better this time around, helped by the excellent voice acting. Some people hate it, but I figure they must be the people that hate everything, cause I find it flawless.
to me risen is better in the gameplay department (i like more action oriented) but DAO is better in dialogue/story department. also downlaod the risen demo and see for yourself, i think its pretty good in giving you an idea of what its like. personally i like both and own them both.
divinity 2 i think is the weakest of the three but its still a good game. i own that as well hehehe.

Note that the EA Download Manager service has a limit on how long you can download titles (I think it's something like six months); downloading it beyond that requires an additional fee which only extends it and does not make it permanent. If you are content to make your own backup of the installer that's not a problem.
