By all means, add my vote in for Settlers of Catan. I also enjoy backgammon and Apples To Apples.
It's hard to find playmates here, even for freakin' chess.

However I used to play knowledge-based board games "Czech Republic" and "Europe" with friends a year ago. It was fun. Everyone knows more about something specific and it really shows there. Unsurprisingly, almost everyone kept failing at sport questions, lol. I'm not sure if something like that is made in Poland, though.

We still have "Heart Attack" game at home but nobody wants to play it. They said it's too depressive for them. The point is balancing between unhealthy life-style (party, weeds, drinking) and healthy life-style (sport, relax at home).

I would love to try Carcassonne one day. Or even more, role-playing World of Darkness. I know, I know, it isn't same genre but it's a social game with identical troubles to find *someone* to play it with.

The biggest problem for me is that in the case of games like Carcassonne, it's ""too videogamey" for non-tech friends. And games like Monopoly is "too party-like" game for my tech friends. Or they just live in a different city.

Be sure to tell how what you liked to play, keeveek. :)

keeveek: It's still bidding. To the end, the price will probably go above $100 ;-)
Perhaps... Let's keep an eye on it!
I love story based games like Arkham Horror but guys, seriously, the best boardgame ever is Through the Ages, at least for all the strategy lovers out there. If you like Civilization, you'll love this. It's currently ranked 2nd on Boardgamegeek and rightly so.

What do you think, guys? Is Neuroshima Hex! Duel a good choice if I want to play with my girlfriend? Are expansions (army packs) for Neuroshima Hex! 100% compatible with Duel?

Or maybe should I buy Neuroshima Hex! instead? There are 4 armies there. But larger map, so maybe playing only with 2 players is less tactical?

Somehow missed this thread.
I've started playing boardgames a few times again when I have someone to actually play with. Last weekend I got my behind handed to me in Carcassonne, then Kingdoms and to round it off getting so close and yet so far from winning a game of Space Hulk...ah well. At least we all lost playing Drageborgen (Whatever it's called in English) - a Player vs. environment roguelike boardgame. I died four turns in.

I'm surprised to see some people mention they still play Chess, yet no one mentioned the entertaining "Knightmare Chess" expansion. Cards which alter the normal Chess like rules in a slightly Magic the Gathering way, with effects like "Bouncing bishop - A bishop of your choice can bounce off the side of the board and continue moving" or "Heir - Select one of your peons. This is now an heir and counts as a second king. To lose you must lose both king and heir"
I never was good at chess, but I found the cards helped me keep interest and playing the right card at the right time helped me level the playing field.
i don't play board games a lot
i do however play card games

Me too, kind of. I've had to resort to playing computer opponents but hey, a game is a game!

Both are great games, and yes, they are compatible. Duel is basically an expansion that just happens to be playable on its own. Duel tweaks some minor issues with the original game (you are less likely to be screwed by a bad draw, though in practice I rarely found that to be an issue). I haven't played the Duel armies enough to know if they're as fun on their own as the original set. So I guess I'm saying Hex alone = good, Hex + duel = better, duel alone = I don't know.

Where the game really shines is in 4-player team mode, but 2-player is still plenty tactical, even on the full map.

If you play solitaire, would that be considered a "bored" game? ;)

Damn, that didn't help :D But thanks :D The major problem is, there is no big difference in price between Hex and Hex Duel. I am probably going to play mostly 1vs1 matches, so the problem looks like this:

a) 4 armies on basicfrom Hex? or
b) board and rules better applying to 1vs1 in Duel

Tough decision :D And I probably will go with your advice and buy them both :D (but not at once, money money money ;-))
I try to get a round of Axis & Allies going at least once pr. month. Usually the 1942 2nd edition at the moment (the 1940 editions are simply too large), but I have the 1941 edition as well for fast games. Pondering on buying the 1914 WWI edition when it launches later this month.

keeveek: Are they good starting titles? Would you recommend something else? I am asking here, because it's interesting how people who play video games see board games. I think they can really be much more exciting than video games. What you guys think?

Go and Mahjong (original chinese + japanese riichi) never get old, they just keep getting better. BloodBowl is so far the best 'sports' game ive managed to find - i own tabletop set, but its really only decoration: Playing it on computer is more easy and comfortable.

I also have two friends who collect board games, but as it usually goes is that we play once game only one time and it is forgotten forever after that. There really arent that many lasting boardgames, but the three on top are really quite enough by themselves.

Oh I also have bookshelf full of rpg manuals, but unfortunately dont really have time for those these days. Maybe when the kids grow up a bit, we can have some good old fashioned P&P action ;)

Collectible card games I refuse to touch as they are money sinks, I have enough of those already...

I figured. But if I started letting the facts get in the way of a good joke (or even a bad one) there would go about half my posts. :p
