I've had the Diablo II battle chest for probably three to four years now and I have yet to actually play Diablo until just a few days ago. College started about three years ago so that probably explains why it took me so long to get around to it. :P

I'm sad to say though that I find the game somewhat mediocre. It certainly isn't a bad game but I just don't see where the hype for this game comes from. To be fair, I haven't finished the first chapter, so perhaps I will come to find this game to be everything everyone said it would be, but for now I don't see it. I'm trying to keep an open mind about it. :)

I love the cinematics in all of Blizzards games, and Diablo didn't dissapoint. I thought the intro was just great. The real time combat is fun but seems to turn into a nightmare when I am trying to deal with many enemies or one big angry bad guy. I find it hard to switch spells and keep up with the action at times. I do have them set to the function keys but I still find myself "hunting" the right spell quite alot.

I'm on the quest where I have to kill Andrail(spelling?) in the cathedral catacombs. I can hardly get a hit on her before she gets to close. (I'm a nercomancer) She easily knocks out everyone of my summoned creatures and mercenary. (3 Mage undead, 3 undead, and 1 gollum) The whole fight pretty much turns into me and her running in circles. Now this is the last quest, at least as far as the quest window seems to imply, and I would figure that I should be high enough level to handle it since I completed everything else, but obviously I'm not. Do I really have to grind for this? Grinding is boring.

I suppose I just feel there is way to much repetitive combat and dungeon mazes than story so far.

I guess you would consider Diablo a Real-time RPG. I like rpgs such as Arcanum (which I'm also playing through at this moment) and Baldurs Gate but I can't seem to find the love for this game.

Who else feels the same way? And for those of you who are insulted by my blasphemy against Diablo, then tell me why I'm wrong. :D
The first chapter is the best, in my opinion.

I spent many hours playing Diablo and I was amped for Diablo II, but in the end I found it fairly disappointing.

Both diablos are good but the first has not aged well.

As for the poison bitch use fire and your character as a lure letting the minions attack by range, curses help, as for the golum, what type, clay is just a buffer as cant do cock all damage also what level are you, grinding is not needed in d2 but if you missed a lot of xp by avoiding fights it may ne an issue. Im usually at 15ish by there and 22ish by the end of ch2

I like the first one, but I wasn't terribly fond of the second one. I do however play it with friends, and it is far, far better if you're playing it with people you know.

And also, Andariel, is a bit of pain, but she's weak to fire.

If you don't mind taking a few deaths... drop a portal in Catacombs level 4, attack, then when you die go back, repeat.

The Act 2 boss is notoriously difficult (or was back when I played it) and sometimes I'd die 20-something times before I'd kill him.

I beg to differ, I never played it back in the day, but my recent play though was actually quite fun, and that was solo, then again I haven't yet played 2, so I don't really have much to compare it too.
I liked Diablo 2 more than 1, it's probably because there's a lot more variety in the game, and they added new mechanics which weren't available in the first.

But, playing the game as a Necromancer was absurdly easy early on, then proved to be a real pain near the end.

I just got a copy of LoD, so it'll be interesting to play through that and Eastern Sun.
I find Diablo 2 to be a grind playing by yourself and not really that fun; torchlight does what it does better on that front. Multiplayer is fun though with others.
What patch are you people playing with? I don't suppose there are any others that stick to 1.09?
Summons aren't particularly useful against act bosses, as they do double damage to summons and hirelings. This makes these bosses a bit of a pain for summon-based necromancers. Also, while necromancers are quite good at handling crowds, they tend to have difficulty against single powerful opponents (although Bone Spirit can do some good damage, but that's not until level 30).
If you play Diablo 2 and Titan Quest back to back (especially with Immortal Throne expac installed on the latter, in which they actually corrected every complaint anyone had about TQ), you'll see just how poor Diablo 2 actually was. D2 is a really poor game with wonderful cutscenes and a really cool backstory that you catch a few glimpses of as your progress through the game. The gameplay itself is complete crap.

To the OP, your patch level could be screwing you if you're playing Necromancer, his minions, save Blood and Iron Golem, were really horrid except in one, fairly late patch. The Clay Golem was absolutely worthless as well. Of course, Corpse Explosion let them solo Hell in 8 person games, which later got nerfed badly.
I will say, TQ and Torchlight kept me glued to my seat where D2 never could. Well, TQ did until I got to Cerberus in the expac. For what ever reason I just couldn't beat him.
Play the first one. It's 237 times better than DII.

Really? I found the necromancer to be way overpowered. You're generally combining the golems with the iron maiden, which makes the bosses pretty much a cake walk, although I did first play with a relatively recent patch set.
I imagine I'm at whatever current patch is available for D2. I used the battlenet installer file instead of the discs.

I am somewhat heavily focused on the summon talent tree. I have 3 regular undead, 3 undead mages, and 1 clay golem. I don't remember what level I'm at. It's late right now and I don't want to fire up the game right now. I certainly was not avoiding fights. I tended to clean up as many enemies as I could. I don't want to retreat straight into another mob.
