Any good examples of a promised trilogy which never made it past part 2?.
As N0x0ss said, The Longest Journey was followed by its sequel Dreamfall.

And about Syberia, its sequel (Syberia II) was released two years later.

But I agree that it is really frustrating when a game's story is unfinished for lack of a sequel.

Sure it was. And it has more of an ending that the first game, but it still isn't really an actual ending, is it?

Dreamfall is a great game but there is no ending other than the fact that everything you tried to achieve failed and everything will come together in the next game that has not been made. Syberia 2 feels also a bit like a waste. You got to the end, you accomplished what you set out to do, and then what? What happens to the main character?

I did not know this happened in Dreamfall (I have not played, but I hope to eventually). Although I must say that the end of The Longest Journey seemed well enough resolved itself.

As for Syberia, both of you are right in that there is no conventional closed end, but again it seemed valid to me. I think if we delve further into the plot after the characters obtaining their goals, had just stolen some of the magic and emotion that I found in that conclusion.

However, if in the future Syberia III is announced, I immediately retract my words. :)
There already have been rumors of Benoit Sokal working on Syberia 3 but nothing was ever confirmed I think.

Indeed :(

"On 1 April 2009 Microïds announced that Syberia III would be released on PC and PlayStation 3 in June 2010 as a real-time 3D game [...] In an interview given in February 2011, Benoît Sokal revealed that work on the game had not even started due to a lack of funding. He says that he would want to use real-time 3D graphics comparable to those of Assassin's Creed. However, that would require a very large budget. He states that developing the game on the same engine as Syberia I and II is not an option because that would lead to a commercial failure. As of 2012, there is still no information forthcoming regarding a release date or even any development work on Syberia III"

Third paragraph. Dreamfall Chapters coming this year.
I almost got a heart attack after reading this, since not long ago I read that blog. I was hoping I misunderstood when reading it, but no... We'll get news about Chapters this year, not the game itself necessarily. I'm doubtful that they would manage to squeeze the game out before the end of the year, since they're probably busy finishing The Secret World before its release at the moment.

Crowned: Many times it is handy to leave a door open for a sequel -- who knows, the game might catch up.

I don't blame them for it, knowing a sequel doesn't exist just makes me a bit melancholic for the story. For example, Pariah (yeah, that average FPS none of you are likely to remember) only just managed to start it's story, it was evident a sequel was planned. But the game didn't sell, the story was left incomplete. Legend has it there was a "sequel" called Warpath, but I've not seen it anywhere.
I remember Pariah. It was a fun game with a few neat weapons and the main character was a doctor.

Warpath is less of a sequel and more of a spinoff. Its an arena FPS similar to Unreal Tournament using the weapons from Pariah.
I only have one thing to add: Tie Fighter remake. ^_^

Space combat in Bioware's SWTOR is an arcade mini-game to earn some extra experience and keep yourself busy while waiting for an operation, but it's not Tie Fighter! So please Lucas Arts... Tie Fighter. Do a TF remake. I am sure hundreds of thousands of fans of the original will buy it if you announce it AND of course not some cookie cutter space shooter. If you add LAN and Online play with the ability to gain achievements and move up the ranks, I'll...

^_^

On the topic of shooters, I was heartbroken after learning that a XIII sequel never panned out.
Is it too soon too soon to think that Bulletstorm will not have a sequel? I liked it a lot and the ending was a cliffhanger.
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine should also have a sequel or I'll be dissapointed.

Senteria: Often developers tease gamers about a future sequel. While it is their own choice to do so, I wish some developers would be devoted to uphold their promise.

I've been playing a couple of adventure games lately and it's frustrating when there's no closure. Especially finding out after a little research that fans have been awaiting a sequel for 5 years to a decade. I'm looking at the longest journey and syberia for example.
Of course other games I'd love to see another game of like Monkey Island and broken sword. However I doubt there will be one.
Umm, Syberia did have a sequel, and a VERY good one at that that gave a lot of closure to the games. however the developers have indeed teased another one but haven't did anything yet.

TLJ had Dreamfall for its sequel.
Bah, I managed to ruin the quotings somehow, this is about warpath anyway.

Yeah, I understood it being a spin-off morely, but wasn't sure. I need to look it up sometime, just for curiosity.
