Luisfius: Smash attack forward + the button. That's it. Smash attack forward + hard attack is a lunge attack.
avatar
SimonG: What is smash attack?

It isn't mentioned in the game.
It's not ingame, but I mentioned it before in this thread. If you have played the Smash Bros. games, the motion done to do the Lunge attack or the Kick is similar to how you do one of those in the Nintendo fighting game. Fast and sharp forward, at the same time as the attack button, weak attack for kick, heavy attack for lunge.
Allright, try number n³.

I really, really, REALLY want to like this game!

Dude I like to ask::

Do you have a PS3, than get Demon's Souls much better than Dark Souls. It does not have that kick feature.

EDIT: here is gameplay footage since I think you did not watched how Dark Souls played

EVERYBODY SHUT UP

I like the game now. Somewhat.

The problem was, I was fighting enemies way over my level at the beginning, who took a good chunk of damage even with blocking. I now found the actual area to be. And guess what, I no longer need to roll around like an idiot to avoid attacks.

Also, thanks to Luisfius and some helpful guides on the internet, I now know how the combat works. I can now, parry, riposte and all that. While the combat is still somewhat lackluster, I can see the appeal.

I just now wish for a "backstabbing sign". I now sneaked onto the knight three times, and everytime I didn't do a backstab, but a normal attack. Which is then followed by running like an idiot towards the bonfire to leave the puddle neatly next to it ...

Weakness: Despair

;D

And yeah, the backstabbing is a bit fiddly at times, I think some weapons may have larger backstabbing hitboxes than others.

Backstabbing is a risk vs reward proposition... it works better on slower enemies and, in general, some have a larger backstab window than others

If you like that style of combat, go for an agile character, so you can "circle-strafe" faster than you opponents and have more opportunities to perform the move

By the way, if by "knight" you mean the first Black Knight in Undead Burg (under a stair guarding an item) , well... he is supposed to kick your ass at the start, so no worries
Yeah, backstabbing is something I've had trouble getting the hang of. A few things that help: Drop your shield before you hit attack, instead of hitting attack with your shield, and, most importantly, line your weapon up with the enemy's back, not yourself. You're probably going to be a bit to the left of their back.

I thought that was the problem. It was the exact same problem I had, too. I went through 2 characters fighting those skeletons and you don't have to do that for a long time.

Enjoy the game!
I wouldn't say the game itself is overhyped but the difficulty certainly is. It has a few brutal moments and it'll throw some scary looking stuff at you but it's really not that bad, and it's very fair. Really it's best to go in with no expectations though, it's not for everyone.

If you're new to the game and struggling always try looking for alternate paths or trying different strategies. I see a lot of new players commit to one route or strategy thinking "it's meant to be this hard, right?" when really they're going the complete wrong way :P

I think Dark Souls is much much better than Demon Souls. It's just your opinion, state it as such.

I'm of two minds about DeSvsDkS. Demon's was better balanced and creepier, but Dark just has a lot more to it. So overall I like Dark more, but there're definitely some things Demon's did better. Anyway, yeah, your first two paragraphs basically summon up my feelings. It's more unforgiving than just, "Hah! Screw you!" like I Wanna Be The Guy or something.

You could probably argue that they're both as good as each other but for different reasons :P

Personally I liked the much more lighthearted atmosphere in Dark Souls, and loved exploring such a big well crafted world. I think the bosses were a bit more imaginative too, or some of them atleast.

Demon Souls had a very strong hopeless sort of atmosphere, and was more difficult I think. And an awesome soundtrack! I'd recommend it to people that loved Dark Souls and want a game that's even grittier and more challenging.

I wish all survival horror has that same atmosphere as Demon's Souls. Also how was Dark Souls more lighthearted?

Elmofongo: Also how was Dark Souls more lighthearted?
It seemed a lot more colourful, had safe zones (bonfires) dotted all over the place, had a lot more friendly characters I think? I could be wrong but I felt like those things made it seem a lot more lighthearted ^^

It had more friendly characters, and yeah, the tone in Dark is more cheerful. In Demon's the world is DYING. In Dark, the world is merely stagnating, but not dying, not yet anyways. To say more would be to spoil a lot.
