rampancy: Why do I want Daikatana?

First, it seems to work in Wine and CrossOver, so I could play this on the Mac. For a student of technological history like myself, this game has the dubious distinction of being possibly the only Windows game in history that launched a petition to prevent it from being ported to the Mac (after talk of a Mac port was rumored).

But I guess in my own way, I'm fascinated with failure. I too lived through a project that I led which was launched under very lofty expectations, only to see it in the end utterly collapse under the weight of both my hubris and the project's own bloated sense of ambition. Where did I go wrong? Where did Romero go wrong? There are a whole lot of answers to be had for this - and maybe in some way I could learn a little bit more about the mistakes I've made, and how to avoid them.

That and I'm just morbidly curious about some of the gaming industry's more salacious stories.
Sorry, I can't afford to buy any additional copies of Daikatana, though if you're lucky, perhaps somebody else here will help you out. Honestly, though, it's only $2.50 right now, so you ought to head on over to GamersGate and see what it was all about. :)
Daikatana is average. I'd clump it in with games like Mortyr and Blood II, maybe even Shogo. Rushed, pretty broken in some areas (like the teammates), not great, not horrible. Just... average.

Honestly, play it if you have not, and when I say play it, I mean beginning to end. All throughout the game you can see Romero really wanted to make something badass, but the engine switch and office politics and Romero himself really pushed it over the edge and killed the whole thing.

What a shame.
You should play the Game Boy one.

Yes, it exists. No, it's not a FPS. It's a Zelda-like game. And Romero seems to like it.
I had it for PC and N64, I didnt think it was as bad a game as everybody made out, I dont remember any game stopping bugs, maybe I had it patched up before playing or something, or maybe its just rose tinted glasses, but for 2.50, if you are curious and as its patched up, I would take a punt on it.
the game's on sale on GamersGate over the weekend.

i think i ought to pick it up at the discounted price. good or bad, it made gaming history.

I was one of those people who really liked Shogo, and played through it from start to finish in one sitting (a rarity for me). There was a quirky charm about it that fit the tone and aesthetic very well. Blood II on the other had was really disjointed; it's like Monolith tossed in this grab bag of jokes putting in everything from attempts at self-parody to Gabe Newell/Valve jokes (???).

Plus, you want to talk to me about annoying monsters in an FPS? Those stupidly annoying facehugger monsters in Blood II's water levels. At least you can reasonably fight Daikatana's dragonflies (inasmuch as you actually have a chance to fight them off).

I liked Blood 2 a lot. Not as much as the first one, of course, but I thought it was solid, if a little crash prone and on the absurdly difficult side. I liked Shogo too, but I thought t felt really disjointed. The writing seemed all over the place, the humour came in at weird times (the line about ripping the dude's leg off and kicking his ass with it seemed woefully out of of place given what was going on), and the fighting was unusual.
Great game.......it has it's flaws(bugs/etc) but it's a good(not great but good enough imo) game regardless.
Got three physical copies of this game lurking around my place...

Ha ha.... nice joke guys, making up games and stuff, good one
I watched a let's play of this game once, but the LPer ended up having to cut it short because of a bug. Didn't give me a great impression of the game tbh xD And what kind of name is superfly anyway...

It depends if they played with the patch or not, and also if they had save gems collected(as one GOGGER did recently) in the game before enabling unlimited saves(This can cause the game to crash during saving/etc).

Besides those two things, the game usually runs well(besides a few clipping errors and the like.) enough that I don't mind the few bugs there are.

Also you never heard of people with the name SUPERFLY before?!? Honestly?!? Not a big fan of the 70's, huh? :\
