AFnord: I would say that the main reason to own a console is if you have friends who you want to invite over to play games with. I do most of my gaming on my PC, but sitting in front of the TV, playing bomberman while participating in the intake of alcoholic beverages is not to be underestimates as a way to spend an evening.
This. Even with my sega and a glass of juice is still a better experience than looking at a monitor by yourself. Now put skype and headphones - something is missing. Still I'm full on for PC gaming :D

PC Gaming

Strengths:

- Most precise control scheme
I would more say that PC gaming offers the right controls for every situation. First person shooter? Enjoy mouse control, unarguably the best way to shoot. Playing a third person action game or an old school platformer? Plug that pad in and get to work! Going for ultra realism in a sim? Plug in that wheel or joystick!

PC gaming lets you choose how you want to play much more than console gaming in general. That's why I like it so much.

That's in theory. In reality most old games will not work out of the box, and that's why we buy from GOG.
Personally I lost Interest in the classic consoles when they got internet access.
My last ones have been PSP 1000 and Nintendo DS after MegaDrive and PSX/PS2

Everything else since then is too much borked to offer the easy "switch on and have fun"-experience, I expect from a console.
And Online Passes killed with DLC and limited harddrive space kille it completely for me.
I have DRM-issues already on my PC, I don't need a newgen Console for that.

The only non-borked 'console' conecpt right now is the iPad/iPod IMHO. I have em both,
cause they are the only ones to get that 'online-thing' right (and I do a lot of other stuff with it).

The WiiU WOULD have been on the right track, if your games were tied to you account and not to your hardware.

I am also a big Indie Game fan, they are just not available on consoles.

My point of view that might vastly vary from others.

Peace :)

The thing is that the same can be said about consoles. There are wheels, joysticks and other stuff for consoles too. You can even plug a keyboard and a mouse into both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 (you would need a third-party adapter for the Xbox 360, though).

Neobr10: Not always. Shitty ports are everywhere.
I know we already had this debate and neither of us wants to relive it, but again, ports so bad they're worse than the console version are extremely rare. Plug in a pad and play it like a console game and you still almost surely have a higher resolution and framerate.

Wait, what? Journey was elected by many publications as the best game last year, and that's an indie title for PS3.

So you can play Halo 4 with a keyboard and mouse then?

:P

Titanium: Consoles are a no-brainer for people who despise driver/system spec/compatibility issues. Set up, power on, insert disc and play.

The fact that I stick around on the good ol' PC is because most of my favorite genres/game series are on it. And I don't have the money to spend on additional money black holes.
+1 to this.

The last console I really played any amount of time was Playstation 1. The one I had the fondest memories of growing up was SNES.
Stupid question, is Halo a shooter, because I can't imagine playing a shooter with anything but a keyboard and mouse.
You know that's just emulating the analog stick movement with a mouse right? It's not true support. I'll look more into it though, out of curiosity.

Sorry, the real ending of the sentence should have been: ...in great amounts.

A handful of indies on PS3/Xbox stand against an army on PC.

unless you count the iOS/Android market into the consoles statistic, where 99.9% are
ruled by indies and AAA titles/ big companies are the minority.

Yes, Halo is a shooter, and aiming is quite terrible on a gamepad, adding artificial difficulty and even necessitating auto-aiming. However, analogue movement controls on a gamepad are much better than the binary controls of a keyboard, and the aiminig isn't so bad that you can't get used to it. Thus it's perfectly reasonable for someone to accept or even prefer a gamepad. I can't stand it, personally. It's interesting that you can always spot game videos of FPS games played on XBox because even experienced players move like awkward robots.

Sorry for rambling. I'm not sure where I'm going with this.

For third person this is true, but for an FPS I don't really agree. WASD along with the mouse allows for very smooth first person movement, better than an analog stick in my opinion.

It's all subjective though, I guess, outside the mouse being objectively more precise.
