cmdr_flashheart: Uh, yeah, people are painting this like a DRM issue, but don't DRM-free games also need some kind of DRM to play MP? I don't play MP games at all, really, so I might be wrong.
Is there a way to play MP games w/o third party services?
The GameSpy closure will affect DRM-free games using its services. This is separate from DRM. Many older games didn't use accounts for online access, instead simply checking that the CD key was valid and not being used simultaneously by another player.
There are various ways of working around GameSpy's absence. The master server can be changed in the game's files with a mod, or manually redirected to some other master server (e.g.
). It's also possible to host LAN modes online with [url=https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/]Hamachi or similar.
It should be possible to get almost all games working online in some form after GameSpy; it won't be quite as good as the original implementation since players have to all be using the same master server in order to see each other.
