Navagon: So they lied when they said it was done then? Well that's my interest in the mod dead then.

When did they say it was done? I remember someone saying that in the other Black Mesa thread, but no one ever provided a source for that statement. I have seen numerous statements to the effect of "we're almost done", but nothing saying that it was actually finished.

It was something along the lines of 'there's nothing stopping us releasing it this year because it's essentially done'. </paraphrase> Clearly it doesn't just need a bit of polish like they were claiming.

Ah, I see, its just a matter of how "essentially done" is interpreted; I saw that as meaning "almost done", others saw that as "its finished".
I don't think there is anything we can say clearly about this most recent delay, they didn't provide anything resembling details. You could be right, the mod did need more than just some final polish, but at the same time, other ideas suggested here could be right, Valve may have stuck their noses in and caused a delay. In the absence of any confirmation of either, we can only jump to conclusions, most of which are probably completely wrong.
I'm just annoyed they don't say anything. Will they say a release date at all?
You know? Is it really too much to ask for?

Following the discussion loosely for the last hour or so, it seems they have said "this year" for the last few years.

It was more like "should be the end of this year" each year up until the end of last year, when they released a teaser trailer that promised a firm "2009" release.

They are being very vague, yes. But if the mod is done and it's purely a business arrangement that is causing the delay then they could have worded their vagueness in a way that indicated that.

cogadh: How is that harsh and why would the devs be shocked? The stated goal of the mod is to re-create the original Half-Life using the source engine with the more modern, updated visuals that allows. They are creating a carbon copy of Half-Life, it is a colorized copy of the original, but a copy nonetheless.

Under "direct carbon copy" I basically understand a copypaste to the new engine. Valve already did that with Half-Life:Source, one of the reasons this mod exists.

bansama: The BM mod is pretty much the DNF of the modding community.

cogadh: I thought that was the KotOR mod, TSLRP.

I have been checking the website + forums at least once a week for the past years. I admire how you're like the only remaining Mod on the forums.
Ironically since the other restoration mod is out, I've not found the time to actually play the game. Ah... well.

Look, they probably don't know it themselves hence the delay. Many things don't go as initially planned in Game and software development and this is not a drawback in this case since they're not making a living with this mod.
I prefer a "when it's done" to a release date they will most likely miss.

True, their vagueness does lean towards the side of unfinished work rather than business issues, but we all know how the video game industry works: when business gets involved, you must misdirect the public because for some stupid reason, they can't be allowed to know when negotiations are happening. Considering that in the past, Valve has only really gotten involved in mods after they have been released and proved popular, that does seem to be the less likely cause of the delay.
Ah well, like I said, this is all just speculation and honestly, whether or not this mod is released now or next year or at all matters little to me, I've got plenty of other games to occupy my time until it does come out... if it comes out. If it does come out, I will play it, if it doesn't, I'll just play something else.

Don't tell anyone, but I haven't actually been to the site in over a month, I needed a break from all the drama.

Oh well... I do understand you. Dashus making the big jump and all...
Don't worry, I'm as mute as a carp can get (like we use to say in france) although the GOG forums might be aware of it already :P
I wouldn't be overly harsh with them -- you are talking about people with full time jobs or full time students making something in their spare time. That said, it was probably a mistake for them to make any promises in regards to release. Should just have a designated person write up a paragraph every month to describe how things are going and leave it at that.

I'd prefer a broken release with the tag line "You get what you pay for!"

And then people would complain about it being broken and buggy -- damned if you do, damned if you don't.
I can wait... Free stuff is free stuff, though polished free stuff is better than just regular free stuff.
I'm excited, but I'm a patient man. Black Mesa had better live up to expectations.
