This "fink on your neighbor" stuff is showing up more and more in the USA levels of government. It's already at the "very creepy" level. Orwellian? Yep.

"stop those who would exploit the ingenuity of others for monetary gain"
Seriously, on what fucking planet does that seem normal.
Urk, Urk, Gurf copied my fire, my idea, kill him!
Seriously, wtf?

If massive violent riots break out then the molotov cocktail industry will boom, the nation's energy usage will eventually go down, and after all that the current economic crisis will seem like a distant memory. See, they do care about us. They are just more clever than we thought.

Just on a side of all this: Polish prosecutors have said recently that wiretaps on mobile phones are used not only to record conversations. The wire works even when the phone is turned off and it's still recording everything around it. So basically, if you have tap on your phone, they record EVERYTHING, not only the conversation.
Add to this that in Polish law there is no "fruits from poisonous tree" rule, and you are pretty much screwed/
Also, Poland has won the competition "most invigilated citizens in European Union" latelty. Polish authorities are invigilating you even in divorce cases or alimony cases (checking billing records, tapping the phone, tracking your location by your phone etc etc)
How f---d is that?
The world we live in is becoming pretty much Orwellian. Just see what they did with Gadhafi. Year ago eastern leaders were shaking his hand, inviting him over for diplomatic dinners and just couple months later
We are at war with Libya. We were always at war with Libya
Next target: Iran.

He might have gained something from Western political realism for a period. Regardless, he chose to do what he did and was caught up by the consequences.

I feel one poster from the movie 'Brazil' (1985) is highly appropriate for this discussion.

Few more from scenes in the movie here:

They said when the phone is turned off, the tap is still using energy from the battery and it's recording everything in range. I don't know what kind of device is this, though (if it uses phone's mic or it has it's own)

I haven't studied e.g. the West and its history with Libya very closely, but I have the impression that things were relatively uneasy from the 1980s (Operation El Dorado Canyon, Lockerbie, aerial engagements) until things began to soften up with the WMD case in 2002-2003 (?). The escalation in recent times got serious enough to trigger a new conflict. Some say double standards and so on, but I don't see a reason to agree with that. The situation may have called for an intervention (the UN and some other parties certainly did), and a coalition (later NATO plus some Arab League members) was able to respond.

But if your phone is actually off, nobody's recording from it unless there's a separate device that's been installed in the phone. And like any electronic system, if somebody has access to do that, they have access to do everything.
