HGiles: It's confirmed on the Bethsda blog post that Skyrim will require Steam.

It's a Steamworks game, isn't it? They would have to rewrite to take Steam out I think.
avatar
Siannah: Not really. There was a mistake and the first original retail version on disc (1.0) came WITHOUT steamworks included. In other word: you could start TESV.exe and Steam didn't started up.
This was corrected with later versions.
Oh good. That gives me some hope that in 2020 we'll see a DRM-free version.
I've been playing the heck out of Morrowind recently; Arena, on the other hand, I gave up on in under an hour.

Who the heck releases a deluxe collection edition and then includes a disk that doesn't even work without Steam? I mean, Bethesda apparently, but what a disappointment (I'm not in the Steam = no sale crowd, but it's nice to have the option...)
Note that we don't know the details of the DRM on the other games. It's quite possible that the whole collection unlocks on Steam.

For Daggerfall and Arena they can just include a .txt with the url to download them from.

JMich: What me, Siannah and quite a few more were trying to tell you is that level scaling by itself isn't evil. It's the implementation that may make it suck, same as any system. If you can't accept that, and continue to chant "Level scaling is evil", then I will continue to sigh and try to explain it again.
Right, just keep telling yourself that and maybe the next level scaled game wont be a total cheesefest. And I didnt go from anything to nothing, I was simply mistaken in praising JA2s System too much. I explained that to you there, but apparently reading comprehension is some sort of problem or you are really desperate to discredit me.

Its clear that Siannah is some sort of hardcore Skyrim fangirl and anything Skyrim does is good and all RPGs should have it. All criticism of it is just someones "opinion" and irrelevant.

Elmofongo: My Problem with Oblivion and to a lesser extent Skyrim is that they feel like they have less things compared to Morrowind.
Well Morrowind has more diversity, interesting places, different landscapes, in Skyrim its all the same, all a grey-whiteish blurry tundra. And you are right about the skill system, its was way more interesting to build the character in Morrowind, in Skyrim the game basically plays itself, there is no need to worry about any skills.
But quest content ,NPCs,factions and stuff Skyrim definitely has way more, the amount of quests is just staggering. Most of the time you run around with 30 open quests.
What I hate most about Skyrim is the buttugly interface/menus,the bland unatmospheric map, the animation action cam zoom that interupts gameplay, and the level scaling which made me kill 3 Dragons easily like 2 hours into the game all while wolves and bears were a big problem. Except for the level scaling, Morrowind does not have those problems.

I'm an optimist. I now level scaling works, since it has worked for almost 40 years. And I do hope that there will be another developer that makes it work as it should work

jamotide: And I didnt go from anything to nothing, I was simply mistaken in praising JA2s System too much.
Yes, you are right. You used a game you didn't understand how it works as a shining example, and when you understood that it did have scaling system, you changed your statement to "it's a shitty system". Your post said that you've only played it with 1.13 and Deidrianna Lives, thus you haven't played it vanilla. Does that mean that you had no idea how vanilla worked, or that you played vanilla, understood the scaling system, and decided to change it? I'd say the first, since if it was the second, you would remember how the system worked.

jamotide: I explained that to you there, but apparently reading comprehension is some sort of problem or you are really desperate to discredit me.
Ah, personal attacks. Always fun.
I don't have a problem apologizing if I'm mistaken, and I have done so in the past. But as I said before, level scaling seems to be a red flag for you, and any game that uses it automatically moves to "It's a shitty game".

You do realize that I'm not advocating lazy level scaling, but proper level scaling, right? And you do know how proper level scaling works. But you'd rather condemn the entire concept because of the failed uses of it so far.

Anyway, you'll just say again that I can't read, or that I can't understand what you mean, that level scaling is evil, that there are no games with good level scaling systems and so on. But then again, that is your opinion, and mine is a different one. Feel free to try and prove that your opinion is universal truth and mine is faulty.
Dude, I didnt change anything, I was simply misinformed about JA2 having a small amount of scaling, thats all. Yeah I get that this is your big chance to discredit my views thats why you keep bringing it up.

I understand that you have some sort of magical view of the perfect level scaling system, but the reality is that other methods to manage difficulty make scaled games even better. Thats why there are mods to remove scaling from games, but no mods to add scaling. (well except your weird attempt to increase JA2s scaling.

Yeah level scaling works, but thats not the issue, the issue is that it sucks and could be avoided if devs werent so lazy.

And yes, that is why condemning the entire concept is safer than risking ruining games with it. I even told you that in the post you linked, but maybe its time for another personal attack? Reading comprehension issue again it seems.

jamotide: Yeah level scaling works, but thats not the issue, the issue is that it sucks and could be avoided if devs werent so lazy.
And that is why I keep going at this subject. You know you are overreacting when condemning each and every level scaling game, yet you keep doing it. You say that because all encounters you had so far with level scaling are bad, you automatically think every level scaling game is bad, I (and others) say that even though we've encountered bad level scaling in games, we do hope the next game won't have a bad level scaling.
And then you tell us that we are wrong.

P.S. How can something that works suck? Or is it a vacuum cleaner?
Hey JMich, do you think JA2 is an RPG, or do you think laptop guy would need to have stats for it be classified as such?

BadDecissions: Who the heck releases a deluxe collection edition and then includes a disk that doesn't even work without Steam?
Well, Valve for starters :-P

Good, we have compressed jamotide level scaling discussion and crosmando unnecessary flame war into a single thread. Well done :-P

Crosmando: Hey JMich, do you think JA2 is an RPG, or do you think laptop guy would need to have stats for it be classified as such?
JA2 has character interaction, character progression, quests, item progression, merchants, skills and a plot. It is an RPG disguised as a strategy game.

And who do you mean laptop guy? Speck from M.E.R.C.? He does have stats. Or the commander? He is supposed to be the I.M.P. you create, so he also has stats. But his death doesn't mean the end of the game, unlike BG.

Or Sega
Yes lets hope there won't be anymore "bad" level scaling in games. Hope is great, and maybe something will eventually change, it always worked so well. Hope and change, man.
Lots of things that work suck, what a stupid question is that? Quick time events work, they suck (yeah yeah I know you love em if not done badly). Spamming works, it sucks. There are really a myriad of things in this world that work which suck. Just like level scaling, I mean actual scaling, not the magical vision you are hoping for.

Should I change "Thread Derailer" to "Thread Merger" then?

Ah, in which case I apologize. When I say something works, I don't mean it functions. I mean that it does a proper job. When I say something sucks, I mean it doesn't do a proper job. So a car that is leaking oil, can't go on any gear over the 2nd, has a flat tyre and the steering wheel is unresponsive is a car that sucks, even if it can get me from point A to point B. It is not a car that works but sucks.
As for spamming, spamming works for the spammer, but sucks for the consumer. It doesn't both work and suck for a single person.
So, I apologize again for assuming something you didn't mean, and I ask for your definition of "works". Especially for level scaling, since by my definition, level scaling doesn't work for you.
