keeveek: I don't know. From what I've seen it's not that bad. It gives you more distance to look at, compared to the original, but yet things are not super tiny like they were in widescreen mod.
avatar
Poulscath: I see a lot of people making this mistake but when using the widescreen mod you don't need to set it to the full resolution of your monitor. For IE games I use 1280x800 even though my monitor is 24"@1920x1200 and it looks fine.
I like to think of non-native resolutions as free anti-aliasing for old games, all without the performance hit :)

But deep down I hate non-native. DOS games are fine, they look "rubbish" regardless of resolution. Anything from Win95 onwards (where the graphics became good enough to notice the difference between resolutions) I have a lower tolerance.

Play in windowed mode, dude...

Hmmm. Often tried, sometimes successful. My last attempt was ToEE. It froze every time I interacted with the window. At fullscreen 1920x1080 the party and NPCs disappear, but reappear up to 1680x1050. I keep it on that resolution now and use my GPU to scale the image so it has black borders around it. Not ideal, but I like it.
Is ToEE a DOS game? :P

Azilut: I laughed out loud at these comparison screenshots. Seriously? You made the "old" shots 1/4 the size of the "new" ones? What, did you think people wouldn't notice?
avatar
Antaniserse: Those are not there to show the increased pixel resolution, but just to sample the use of the full widescreen for the main view, and the new interface
Even so, if I want to see the differences in the new interface, I'd like to be able to see what it's being compared to without squinting.

I'm not ragging on the Enhanced Edition (haven't played it, so I wouldn't know); I just think those are some ridiculous screenshots.

Was that with or without latest version of Circle of Eight? If not, it's recommended even on the first playthrough.

I believe ToEE doesn't properly support anything above 1680x1050.

Incidentaly, if you're getting black borders at the sides, it's because 1680x1050 is a 16:10 resolution and your monitor is 16:9

That's true, but I tried anyway, hoping I would be lucky :)

That, and I'm using the GPU as the scaler, so everything is my screen's native resolution. I have thin black bars at the top and bottom as well to account for the 30 pixel difference too!
In addition to my last post, i've noticed a few more or less f*cking annoying bugs that haven't been fixed and the low res UI... im runnin the game at 1920x1080 but the rest of the UI looks like 600x400... Overall this doesn't feel THAT much enhanced, but im glad i spent the twenty bucks on this (:

Your first playthrough with BG?

Nirth: Yeah, you sort of though. Unwritten rule to use native resolution with a LCD monitor. :P
Really? I often use a non-native resolution on my LCD monitor simply because at full resolution the UIs are often too tiny to see clearly. In fact, I only have two or three games that I actually run at full resolution, and I've had my monitor for about 7 years and I've never had any problems doing so.

It's sort of a joke (for lack of a better word) going around in technical circles. LCDs' quality are best shown when using native, it's not necessary though. If you find it easier to see in a lower resolution then by all means use it.

No, i've completed the vanilla BG a few times. This may be just a issue with my graphics card or... i don't know, the UI look a bit blurry and i thought the bugs would've been fixed by now or at least in this enhanced edition
Sounds pretty awful, they really should of just stuck to making a 1:1 port for the iPad. I'm almost tempted to get it to experience the train wreck first hand, but I won't support the off-chance that these people will get a go at making sequels or "enhancing" other games. I might buy it after an inevitable price drop though.
