tinyE: No narration + unicorn scene + no sunrise at the ending = director's cut = WAY BETTER!
listen to this wise man!

Will it blend? That is the question

Elmofongo: Why is it that Ridley Scott's films end up like this? Just 2 weeks ago I watched the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven and it was much better than the original. Are his films so ambitious or too big that its up on the chopping block for the theatrical release?
I'm not sure what kind of pressure he usually faces from the studios, but he is the type of director who isn't afraid to tinker with his work years after it was released. He's more of a visual storyteller, and I don't think he has a great sense of what works as far as characterization and good story structure. In hindsight he can benefit from new technology and trimming/adding on where people had problems with his work.

And it does also seem to be true that he gets more control with later cuts, which makes sense.

I'm not sure at which point Scott decided to redub Rutger Hauer's deliberate "father/fucker" melding with a distinct "father"
The Final Cut is the first version to use "father" since the workprint version.

This comment is just so wrong on so many different levels. :D
Yes, if it had narration you watched the theatrical.
Now go and find a copy of the Final Cut and watch that.

s23021536: ah Blade Runner.... best sci fi film ever! Star Wars? Well yes, except that is not scifi...
2001 A Space Odyssey? Never fair to play the trump card in an argument...
The Matrix (the first one)? Brazil? Dare I say - Inception?

Matrix was epic, and the second one perhaps even more so. I have to confess : I've never seen Brazil so thank you for informing me about it :) I'll have a good film / bad film evening this weekend by renting that and The Beast from Jucca Flats...
Oh I'm willing to contend that there may be films out there with a richer more interesting story than Blade Runner, and perhaps even better dialogueandr acting (looking at you Sean Young) but the film, to me, is utterly insurmountable when it comes to atmosphere they created to convey the world they envisaged for, uhm 2019. There is and only ever will be, exactly one Vangelis (although from what I understand there was some serious drama around the creation of the soundtrack).

Incidentally, in case I haven't mentioned it before : the game is... excellent (a word I'm using with considerable constraint). Even tinyE couldn't help buying the last amazon copy some weeks ago :)

Moments. "All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain." I used to do that speech as an audition monologue, now and then.

I was actually agonising over whether I thought Brazil or 12 Monkeys was the best Terry Gilliam Sci-Fi film after I posted, to tell you the truth, so I recommend that one too, if you haven't seen it!

Cool will do! :) A film weekend is way overdue - although the first thing that I'll go for (just because I promised myself) is 'Apocalypse Now' now that I've finished reading the book it drew inspiration from.

Seeing as this is a Blade Runner thread :)

The Final Cut on blu-ray is THE version to watch. It's my demo disc for when I want to show off my system and just what blu-ray is capable of.
