I guess i did destroy your brain with logical arguments.
But there is no distinction. That's the point. DLC stands for Downloadable Content, it could either be a a huge expansion or a pack of new skins. It's that simple.

Because that's when DLC actually got put in the video game industry. Bethesda Game Studio basically started it with the Horse Armor DLC for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Before that it was known as add-on or expansion pack and DLC's were offered for FREE in patches.

The fact is that nowadays any expansion that is sold online and requires the base game falls under the DLC category. That's the standard set by the industry. You can call it whatever you want, but if you want t buy that Skyrim "expansion" you will have to search under the DLC category. They could have called it " downloadable add-ons", "downloadable expansions", "hamburgers" or whatever, but they have chosen to call them DLC. Don't blame me.
Why does CD Projekt RED still call them expansion packs? Why does Todd Howard? Why do a bunch of kickstarters like Niggles said they do?
I'm not blaming you I'm blaming the video game industry. I will continue to call expansion packs expansion packs and not DLC's.

DLC stands for downloadable content. A huge expansion and a pack os skins are both DLCs.
That's fine, you can call them whatever you want.

If you don't want to make distinctions thats ok. I prefer to call an expansion pack an expansion pack even if its only digital available and I have yet to meet someone who does not understand what this might contain; that does not work as easly with DLC as description since ppl either assume some small fluffy stuff or assume nothing at all because of its widespread use for everything.

So you have many types of DLC, including expansions, map packs, skins and so on. They all are a different categories of DLC's, but they all are DLC's as long as they are an addition to a base game and delivered digitally. So you can have a meaningful discussion of skins vs. expansions, but it is not right to say that an expansions is not a DLC.

Call every game a DLC? Hmm.. I don't think so. I mean yeah, games consist of contend that you can download but I think in that regard contend was always meant as "part of it, never the whole thing".
*ponders* Meh, no Idea.

(it is a bit like saying Chimpanzees are not Primates... even though many people talk about Chimpanzees without calling them primates)

"Downloadable content (DLC) is additional content for a video game distributed through the Internet by the game's official publisher or other third party content producers. Downloadable content can be of several types, ranging from aesthetic outfit changes to a new, extensive storyline, similar to an expansion pack. As such, DLC may add new game modes, objects, levels, challenges or other features to a complete and already released game."

The key word here is additional. Hope that makes it easier for you to understand.
