foxworks: I thoroughly enjoyed the Wing Commander series. However, never did play the Academy and Armada titles. If you're into a dog fighting combat, but in space, then Wing Commander is for you. If you're into space travel, bartering commodities, etc, then Privateer offers that. At 80% off it's a fantastic deal.
Neverfree: Thank you mr. Cheese Biscuit sir! :) I may just wait until the final day of the sale to see what gog throws us, closer to my payday anyways :P another GoGer mentioned a joystick making it far for enjoyable, may have to look into getting one :)
for the wing commander games, a joystiq would help /a ton./
i nearly finished privateer and it was mostly thanks to a trusty joystiq that i managed that particular feat back when these games were new.
Neverfree: Since the other summer thread is lame and this appears to be where all the cool kids hang, I shall ask here as well!
Never had a chance to play any of the wing commander series and I'm a little hesitant to purchase them. Are they newcomer friendly/enjoyable or more so for veterans that have previously played before, for a trip down nostalgia road?
real.geizterfahr: Wing Commander 3, 4 and 5 are very newcomer friendly. 1, 2, Academy and Armada are newcomer friendly as well, but... they haven't aged very well :/ Nostalgia only. Privateer isn't
exactly newcomer friendly. You buy a better ship? Enemies get stronger. You buy a better weapon? Enemies get stronger. You buy better armor for your ship? Enemies get stronger. That's Privateer...
Privateer 2? Not Wing Commander (it's Privateer 2, not Wing Commander Privateer 2), but a very good game as well. Feels a bit like Fear 'n Loathing in Las Vegas though... Cutscenes are very trippy. But the flying is very good and should be manageable for newcomers.
i totally want to chime in here.
privateer 2's cutscenes are...very weird, indeed.
privateer one's story all hangs together quite nicely and is told pretty well throughout the game.
privateer 2? it just goes off the deep end being completely weird. and it doesn't even take very long for this to happen, either. so, either you'll be fascinated by how totally bizarre everything is, or you'll be horrified and skip the cinematics to get to the gameplay :P
