justanoldgamer: Now you have me hemming, arghing, hawing and hrming about it too. I played one settlers game way back then (do not remember which one) and did not like it. I was expecting Command & Conquer or Warcraft 2 and got a very slow paced game instead. That was a long time ago and I've changed a bit since then and also got a little slower myself.

Now going back to hemming, arghing, hawing and hrming while eating dinner (spaghetti).

skeletonbow: I'm a big RTS game fan, going back to C&C and then Warcraft 2 and beyond since. Played zillions of hours of RTS with the most hours probably racked up in Starcraft although my favourite RTS of all time is "The Lord of the Rings The Battle For Middle Earth II The Rise of the Witch King" (holy crap that has to be the longest video game name ever made). :) Unlike probably the majority of RTS gamers out there (so it seems to me observationally anyway) that seem to strongly prefer setting the game speed to warp speed as fast as possible so you can't even think and you're controlling one of your units while the other 200 units are standing around doing nothing, I am definitely the type of RTS player that likes to have my units all doing things and not standing around and I play the games at a slower pace so that I actually have time to give them all orders to do stuff and to have time to think about strategy and what I'm actually doing. I'm not a "build guys, send them in battle to their kamakazi death, build and send more" player, but a "devise a strategy, keep my army alive the whole time, savour the strategy and tactics and take my time" kind of guy. :) So I usually start a game on "normal" speed, and if I find that too fast I back it off one notch at a time until comfortable. Once I've become familiar with a game enough I might speed it up a notch or so if I've slowed it down previously.

I hate playing RTS games on greater than "normal" speed though with "horserace" players. That's not strategy to me but rather has a feel of it like playing those mindless zombie attack games on a video game console where the enemies have no AI and you just spray bullets endlessly and run forward. I need real strategy and tactics and thought to keep me interested and a casual pace. I watched several documentaries on Sun Tzu "The Art of War" as well as reading much of the book, and I employ Sun Tzu techniques and strategies in my video game play both against AI players and human opponents and such tactics work awesome. Loads of fun to be had with strategy when I can kick back and relax with them. Drives some folks nuts though so I avoid playing with speed demons. :)
Speed demons. Sounds like my son. We both started Diablo 3 the same day. By the time I had finished the game at the normal level, he had beaten the game through inferno level, which is like 3 or 4 levels up from normal. Mainly he does it by by passing a lot of content of the game. I have tried to play with him before but it was impossible because I want to explore EVERYTHING while he is content not to.

Some of those bundles are nice! Something else, if you happen to own any of the games in the bundles you can remove them and still get the discount!

It's great that all daily bundles are available today as I have now bought all the daily bundles and flash sale games I wanted, but I bet tomorrow some people will complain that there are no new bundles, just like they complain the flash games are always the same (even though there are 200+ of them).

I'm waiting until the end of the month just in case Banished and Outlast Whistleblower are one of the flash giveway (or maybe just flash sale) mentioned but if they're not I'll buy them then (once the paycheck arrives) along with some 50% off titles.

I also expect the flash deals tomorrow to go back to 2 per half hour and then to go back to 6 per half hour on the 29th.

Yep, I got 'em. :-)

I'm trying to resist the urge to buy the Flash Sale Spellforce game as well and wait for it to come on sale at a later date. I have SO MANY games in my backlog anyway that I wouldn't be playing it (or any of the earlier Spellforce games) any time soon.

Ah, let's be honest, I'm trying to resist the urge to buy ANY MORE games in the Flash Sale (or bundles for that matter). Whilst my haul is only small in comparison to some *cough* txnca *cough* Gnostic *cough* I've spent around £52 ($86) which is WAY more than I really should have! :-)

YESSSS!!!! I totally play the same way as you. I explore everything everywhere and usually end up finding all of the secret areas, secret goodies, secret missions, chocolatey goodness, solving optional puzzles and quests and end up by the time I'm done a game having a 100% completion or pretty damned close to it. I take the time to pick things off the ground and sell them in games like Diablo/Torchlight etc. and take my time to upgrade my character when I level up, compare various options strategically etc. Most people I play games with are in non-stop action fight kill mode, dont stop to pick up anything or to explore any areas and run looking for the exit/end and miss half the damn game then complain because I "take too long fucking around". I'm not fucking around, I'm enjoying the damned game and I'll do it as a wandering party of 1 if I have to in order to enjoy myself. :)

The best comes when I tell them all the cool loot I got, or special things they missed out on though. :) As a general rule, whatever the "time to complete" is on sites like howlongtobeat.com ... if it says "40 hours" for gameplay, then I am more likely going to get something like 60 hours of gameplay out of it or even more doing the same thing, not counting idle time eating/sleeping while forgetting to shut the game off (ie: on Steam that tracks game time).

Hehehe, I have to get up to take my daughter to school and go to work but I still stay up late and play games (or post on GOG).

What's your backlog like? Mine is just SILLY and it's not just GOG games either. Before I discovered this site, I'd buy CD/DVD games and boxes sets so I have a pile of them sitting in a corner too.

I would call the kind of gaming we do as Old School Gaming! Everyone I grew up playing games with all play this way because at the time $20-$30 bucks for a game was a lot of money! Now days, it's like they are in too big of a hurry to really enjoy the games they buy. I'm glad my daughter plays like I do. She learned what all you miss when you rush through while playing Sacred Gold. She started playing it after watching me play then would get mad that she couldn't find any of the good loot like I was finding. Learned her lesson from that!

Well, it isn't too bad, since a lot of these games that I have been buying I have already beaten. Like the Myst series. I had already beaten it and just wanted to get something that would run now and then beat it again in a matter of days. I also have about 15 games on steam. Most of them I have beaten, but Skyrim and Oblivion are taking forever since I got the ones with ALL the content installed already. I think my biggest backlog for now will be all of the D&D titles I just got. I know they will take a while the way I play them.

That is what I do no matter what. Diablo 3 maybe online, but I play by myself so I can do what I want when I want, not when someone else who is in a rush wants me to. If it had been like WOW, I don't think I would have played it very long.

Indeed. I like both single and multi-player, but it is about 95%+ single-player action for me in practice. What is interesting about it all though, is there are some games that REQUIRE you to think, games like the entire Myst series, Tex Murphy series and most other adventure or point-n-click games as well as many FPS or other game genres also and if you do not stop and take the time to think something out then you might just end up getting stuck and have no idea what to do, or you might miss some important object that is needed, miss some text based clues because you didn't want to wait and hear what the guy was saying and there's no way to read or hear it again now, etc. People who don't take their time and explore and think things out end up unable to complete such games more often than not because they have very limited patience, curiousity and in many cases not very good observational skills.

Someone like me rarely if ever consults a walkthrough guide/video or uses cheat codes or other methods of unfair advantage because I want to figure things out on my own and actually complete the necessary steps as part of a game's fun, accomplishment etc. Sometimes that can rack your brains for quite some time but it can be fun for me at least. I think the majority of people playing such games probably don't have the patience though and either abandon the game, or they use a walkthrough or cheat. That's ok if that's what they want and they get something out of it for themselves but I'd rather not play a game at all than to have to play every game with the solution in my hand. :)
Gotta have patience to fully experience some games for sure. :)
