Stilton: Woah, thanks. I already have Rune Classic, and The Banner Saga and new M&B Viking Invasion are wishlisted. Didn't think about Settlers 4, but it looks good. Has anyone had experience of Settlers games - which one is best?
For me Settlers 2 was the best. I had so much great time playing it, 15-16 years ago... still remember some of its music. The 10th Anniversary is good too, better graphics, more polished I guess, maybe a little easier, IIRC. I never tried any of the sequels, they didn't appeal to me at that time, but I don't remember why. Maybe were too different. You could try the 10th Anniversary first and see how you like it, but you should know that both are time demanding games and maybe you won't like them if you're not having patience. :)

Edit:
"Considered by most fans to be the best part of the Settlers® series" - it's in The Settlers 2 GOG's description and I think they are pretty right with that.

Ragnarblackmane: Have you tried Where Angels Cry?
http://www.desura.com/games/where-angels-cry
DRM-Free version, or should be.
I became interested in this once I learned it was heavily influenced by Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. It's not a bad little game, simple puzzles with HOG included.
I've got that one, but haven't played it yet. Thanks for the recommendation! All this talk of HOGs, and looking over my collection, has gotten me in the mood for some.

genkicolleen: Dark Arcana: The Carnival - As mentioned by Hypersomniac, this is REALLY a good game.
That one's in my collection as well. It does seem promising. As does Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends, which I picked up from another GOG member.

EDIT: And I'm off for the night. If someone would keep an eye out for Space Run: Fast and Safe Delivery for me if it comes around the Flash Deals, I'd be quite grateful!

Up for another 4 hrs so I'll stand watch!

genkicolleen: Let's start with the freebies, shall we?

Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst and Fairway Solitaire:
https://store.bigfishgames.com/biz_dev/coupon.php

MCF: Ravenhearst is a straight HOG, but is the beginning of the Ravenhearst-themed games. I did not like the look of this one AT ALL when I first saw it, but the story was compelling, and I'm glad to have been able to see the roots of the Ravenhearst saga. There are a lot of HOG scenes, interspersed with the now-famous door-lock puzzles, as well as finding new pieces of the story and jigsaw minis.

Fairway is a completely addictive solitaire game. If you need any help understanding the scoring, let me know -- I have it all typed out in my review ^__^

Linking to the PC version, but you can get both PC and Mac for free if you wish :D
<span class="bold">Awakening 1: The Dreamless Castle</span> -- Use the coupon code MOBFREEAWAKENING

Now, for recommendations, do you want ones that are only available on Steam, or do you want recommendations for Big Fish, too?
Thanks. Big Fish... (much prefer drm free but since i have a bigfish account i never used...)

IAmSinistar: I did a quick scan of library and here are some of the HOGs I have. Got more than thought.

Alchemy Mysteries: Prague Legends
Angelica Weaver: Catch Me When You Can
Dark Arcana: The Carnival
Hidden Runaway
Midnight Mysteries 1: Edgar Allan Poe Conspiracy (Groupees bundle)
Midnight Mysteries 2: Salem Witch Trials (Groupees bundle)
Midnight Mysteries 3: Devil on the Mississippi (Groupees bundle)
Midnight Mysteries 4: Haunted Houdini (Groupees bundle)
Nightmares from the Deep: The Cursed Heart
Samantha Swift and the Golden Touch (Groupees bundle)
Samantha Swift and the Hidden Roses of Athena (Groupees bundle)
Cool thanks. I got some of those from Groupees bundles i never played....(guilty look) :)

Now, for recommendations, do you want ones that are only available on Steam, or do you want recommendations for Big Fish, too?

HypersomniacLive: If I may butt in here for a moment - note that BFG is exactly like Steam, i.e. mandatory client to download/ install games. They can be played without the client, but not moved to a different folder. They're as DRM-ed as it gets.

avatar
Niggles: IHOGS lol. i mean just ones u would recommend to people. best ones? ;)
avatar
HypersomniacLive: If you're interested in DRM-free titles in the genre, you could take a look at and [url=http://www.gamersgate.com/casual/hidden-object?filter=feature:12]GamersGate to see if they carry any of genkicolleen's recommendations. My personal recommendation is Dark Arcana: The Carnival.
Will do.thanks :)

thesmashingone: Ah, I've been waiting for Dreamfall too, since I snagged The Longest Journey during this sale and would like to go through the first two games. Gonna give up Sacred 2 and Deus Ex: Invisible War for it! I agree with CarrionCrow that it's gonna show up sometime sooner or later (hopefully sooner though)!
Hey! Looks like GOG granted our wish!
It went on sale yesterday(for me) and I picked it up.
Hopefully you managed to get it as well! :)
Not sure why the site is erratically slow?. surely the demand for the existing games on flash has sort of died after the first few rounds?

You would think so. I get that some people can't hang around for Insomnia, but this has been a very, very, very slow-motion variant of Insomnia. Some of the same rules apply, only instead of missing out because of limited supply, you are a lot more likely to miss out because it's too slow and time-consuming to continuously monitor.

you got to really wonder if they planned it this way....

Why would you need to monitor the sale? You just have the check GOG five times a day, for example.

What I wonder is if this will be seen as such a rousing success on absolutely every level that it'll be repeated verbatim. Seriously, if it wasn't for the community, the people here to talk with, I would've packed it in days ago.

You're right. Insomnia mentality on my part. It could be watched sporadically, and not miss anything. But dear gods, that feels extremely detached to me. I know, I'm weird. But I prefer constant engagement, rapid-fire. Energy levels are higher that way, more inclination to get hyper and do some serious damage to my wishlist.
Also, now that I think about it more, with the constant connection to it, the sale becomes an actual experience. People will go wherever when it comes to sales, in a lot of cases. Cheapest price wins. But if you want people to keep on coming back, day after day, year after year, sale or no sale, with a high level of interest, I think you need to produce events that allow for that kind of connection to be built.
It's like right now. My main thoughts regarding the sale are the people I sent stuff to. Well, that and being unfortunate enough to learn about the music videos of someone named Chainmale, who I learned about while trying to playfully torture my fellow forum-goers.

I'd be really interested to know the sales numbers of the games according to the repetitions.

How many buyers are of the kind that login almost everyday, how many are of those that only come for the sales, or that have been away and came for this one. I'm sure the latter kind rarely (maybe never) posts in the forums but they might be buying anyway.

An example of a positive outcome of repetition: I had a certain amount of money to purchase things at the beginning of the sale but after the 20 I had more money available and I've made several planned purchases I could not afford in the first days. I could hardly have done that in Insomnia.

And don't take me wrong, I loved Insomnia and I would have enjoyed another sale like that. All I'm saying is that a sale like this might have some positive effects in the total number of sales.

I think they're just building up the anticipation. We're on like 5 solid days of repeats now and the faithful tracking horde are growing weary and restless. I tell myself 'well, that's probably going to be it, I can just check once a day now for the new bundles'... but here I am, continuing to check it making sure I do not miss any potentially new flash titles. I groan each time I see '1849' go from grayed out to large feature and then passing again into nothingness, but each time that tired, picked-over carcass passes by an itch grows larger inside me that is just waiting for the fresh meat to arrive.

When that nubile little doe scout scampers into the grayed out zone, signaling that her flock is not far behind... there will be a feeding frenzy the likes of which will not soon be forgotten.

Sounds like I stop clicking those videos and went to sleep at the right time. :D
