The records of SA wars are scarce indeed (wars of NA even more I think) We do have records tough of them happening. How many how often is hard to tell but we do know they were bloody, genocide levels at times.
The point on Iraq war is that it is presented as a major conflict lasting years. In scope of 1000 years it is not that major. Fall of Byzantine Empire for example was long and brutal conflict lasting decades till Constantinople finally fell. Yet it is presented with few blips.
