GOG bundling offline installers with Galaxy files, May 2017:

GoG wants to get rid of the Downloader, but many people here use it and love it. So please show GoG that we need it still by voting here for keeping the Downloader and keeping it up to date. 2167 people voted for this, they were all ignored:
https://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/keep_the_gog_downloader_and_keep_it_up_to_date What did GOG do?
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/we_say_goodbye_to_gog_downloader/post1 Pay attention to the wording, especially the bolded parts:
After announcing that we’re ceasing the active development for GOG Downloader 6 years ago, the time has come to disable it. We put a lot of work into making GOG.COM an up-to-date place for gamers.Supporting GOG Downloader, which became an obsolete tool some time ago, simply does not go hand in hand with the goal we mentioned above.
In a week from now, we will deactivate GOG Downloader entirely, and it won’t be possible to download any files with it. As of the 17th of March, there will be two methods of downloading games from GOG.COM – via the browser or with the GOG GALAXY app. For more information on how to download your games and digital goodies go here.
GOG taking an option from the user was a mistake in my opinion.
Let us go back in time to
a PSA posted by skeletonbow on October 05, 2016. Part of it reads:
Lately I've noticed some signs that GOGdownloader usability is declining for folks, such as dead GOGdownloader links becoming more and more common, and GOG technical support responding to support requests to fix downloader links with autoresponder mails telling you to use GOG Galaxy instead. This suggested to me that the writing is on the wall, that GOGdownloader is being phased out and that they are very likely to just drop support entirely in the not distant future and just completely remove GOGdownloader links.
We all know that this would happen sooner or later some day as GOG announced over 2 years ago that GOGdownloader was officially being replaced by Galaxy, and that GOGdownloader was officially no longer supported in terms of receiving new software features or bug updates, but that they would keep the links working for some time to come, but without any specific end of life date.
What does that tell you and why would GOG keep a tool deprecated for 6 years in the first place? After 6 years they decide to disable it in order to make way for "GALAXY". Notice the emphasis on Galaxy. I could go on detail about marketing tactics, but that's a tale for another time.
Back to GOG dropping support for the Downloader, this is one of the responses of the community:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/we_do_not_want_say_goodbye_to_gog_downloader/page1 Only one blue (Ashleee) appeared in the thread saying
this:
DRM-FREE policy will always be our core value so for sure the offline installers won't be gone
Notice the reactions and how there is no further comment from Ashleee.
Fast forward a few years and GOG put
this on their store. Why would GOG, a promoter of DRM-free, do such a thing? The response of the community was so vehement that they had to take the game down and issue a public apology. What happens when a core value becomes tainted?
Something else that bothers me (check the attachment).
It's not the fact that I have to click in order to expand a menu, but the fact that Galaxy takes precedence over the offline installers.
And since there's been talk about parity and
changelogs...
As pointed by
Kerebron in this comment, GOG should provide checksums in order to verify downloads. Because if you want to do that right now, you have to go with a
workaround.
I'll take the downvote and I hope it'll make you feel like you accomplished something today.
