dtgreene: Points of no return, where, after a certain point, you can't go back and explore the rest of the game to get things you missed.
One-time-only areas that you can't revisit. (Especially annoying when it's the final dungeon, like in TES: Arena (if I ever get that far.)
GameRager: To be fair: points of no return mostly suck if they aren't marked as such or one has to find out about them when it's too late to stop them from happening. If one knows about them beforehand and can prevent them till they want to do them then they are ok(imo). One-time-only areas that you can't revisit. (Especially annoying when it's the final dungeon, like in TES: Arena (if I ever get that far.)
The DS remake mitigated this problem; you eventually get to return to the main world after you reach Talonberg. So, you're still stuck there for a while, but at least eventually get to return to get things you missed (and I believe this is required to get the new ending they added). (Also, it's now possible to revisit Floatland after clearing it.) Incidentally, if this game were to get another remake, one that is more faithful to the original (rather than the complete remodeling, including the removal of the level/XP system and the rework of how different races work), this is one of two features from the DS version that I would like to see ported over (the other being the ability to store items).
Interestingly enough, I have had a similar issue with Final Fantasy 6, where a certain event occurs that's functionally equivalent to an early (as in, half way or so) point of no return.
