Crewdroog: I found an exhausted humming bird trapped in the garage. It was on the verge of death, so I placed it on a pine tree branch and made some sugar water. With some coaxing, it drank. About 2 minutes later when I went to offer it more, it took off.
Nifty.
We had one stuck in my parents' garage last year. Even with both doors wide open, it couldn't quite figure out how to leave, and would buzz around between the open doors and the ceiling. We couldn't coax it out, either. Eventually, my mum cut some flowers and I hung a whole bunch from the garage door handle (at the top of the opening). When we returned, it had left. It had been in there for hours.
I very recently learned that they are attracted to the bright red release handles that hang from the door mechanism on the ceiling. I've been meaning to replace them with something dull, so thanks for the reminder!
