These are your opinions. They are not enforceable across the community otherwise it would be censorship, hence the original post is invalid.
But asking for some degree of self-restraint isn't calling for censorship.
Before you all start giving Brasas too much shit, realize it could be worse.

He could be this guy. :P

At least Brasas has six years under his belt in here. :D

Do you happen to know what are those "Sequences" people in comments are referring to?
Mule!

I mean, M.U.L.E!

Well... kind of yes.

The SSC blogger is part of a community that identifies as Rationalist. There is a founding figure of sorts named Eliezer Yudkowski in those circles. I believe the sequences are his writings - not sure if other authors involved.

Although the religious comparison would probably enrage most of them slightly, think of the Sequences as Rationalist gospel. It's an exhaustive exploration of how to be rational and arrive at the truth in many different topics.

You can probably find them in a site called Less Wrong. But Google will help for sure given all these references.

To answer the thread title:

I'm pretty dang happy with the community we have :P
I want a peace&love community where we would live carefree in the mountains, growing crops, raising animals, living off the land and enjoying it, having sex & drugs for everyone, singing songs at night around a bonfire, etc....

Hum wait, I think I posted on the wrong website....

Brasas: But where do you see me saying that those opinions of mine should be enforced? I have not, and that's why I don't see what you consider invalid...

I'm not advocating censorship. At most I'm advocating self-censorship aka: be tolerant and nice even if you feel otherwise.

Precisely because I do not agree with censorship, the change I want needs to come from convincing others like you that being nice and tolerant is better. ;)
But you have just hit the nail on the head. Your term:
convincing others like you that being nice and tolerant is better. ;)
Implies that I am not nice and tolerant. Why is this? Is it because I choose a DRM free store to purchase my games and so get annoyed with pro-steam threads, perhaps. Or perhaps because I find clients terrible and so I always push for a client free world.
This is the problem with the thread in my eyes.

As far I understand the sequences are exhaustive and kind of dry. Suggest you read a bit more of the SSC posts as Scott writes well, by which I mean he gives interesting examples, has touches of humor and structures his essays well. Use the tags to find topics of interest. That should tell you if you care or not about rationalist perspectives.

Are you shifting the goalposts? :)

Any unintended implication about you in my latest reply is irrelevant in regards to the validity of the OP and whether or not I advocated censorship.

I have no opinion about you being nice and tolerant, other than the impression I am getting that you want to have a slight argument with me, over something I'm a bit unsure about?

I mean, if your client free world will be achieved by forcing others to not have clients, then yes, we might have a problem. But is that how you want to act on the world? By forcing others?

I need sarcasm to survive.

Brasas: Here's the takeaways I see:
- Avoiding repetitive arguments is valuable but taboos / banning are not universal solutions.
- If you feel you need to answer / respond to someone and their question or post looks like a challenge: be particularly aware of your own emotional engagement.
- Be particularly considerate of newbies. Instead of being dismissive (also via joking) point them to FAQs, link to previous posts or maybe just ignore them (if you can't be constructive)?
- Be particularly considerate of numbers - what I would call mobbing - when the same person is being talked to by numerous others it is inevitable to feel overwhelmed, even if everyone is polite.
- Tone does wonders. Just all around being nice (no sarcasm, no irony, no dismissiveness) and taking others while assuming good faith. This ties back to emotional engagement. If you feel like you are talking to an enemy, you're probably part of the problem.
I really agree with what you're saying, and perhaps trying to do. However, at times it seems the most crotchety, old-at-heart, or stubborn people here end up being the most vocal, or the quickest to answer.
