Hello kai2!
Well observed, and I think it is an interesting topic. Maybe, posting here about individual game offers that we have passed up without purchasing yet, and why, could lead to interesting recommendations by the community.
Rather than listing all of the games I am continuing to wait for another opportunity, or the games which discount I did not considered enticing, let me mention here just two examples and my 'reasoning' on my decision:
First: "In Other Waters"
The concept and art design is really intriguing, the 50% discount was reasonable (in my opinion), but I pulled the trigger on "Still There" instead, which I am observing already for quite some time and finally convinced myself.
Both games do rely mainly on their HUD interface and on their narration (story). While "In Other Waters" seem to be more like a kinetic or visual novel (or maybe "walking simulator"), "Still There" has more actual puzzle elements--figuring out how things work and how to manipulate them.
So, I thought, I would give only one of them a try in the next couple of weeks. And get the other one later on, if I do like the experience.
(I know, it does not seem to be fair for the second game to be judged by my experience with another barely similar one. But nowadays I make my purchase decisions more based on my current gaming mood, if I would actually play the game sooner than later.)
And second: "Gorogoa"
I really loved the innovative and super creative puzzles from Gorogoa's demo many years ago. The 70% discount was great! Unfortunately, it is one of those experiences, which I propably would enjoy only once, and never come back to.
I do not mind playing even story focussed or point & click adventure games over and over again (the "Myst" series, the original "Broken Sword 1" and others, for instance) if they captured enough my imagination despite the fact, that I do memorize all the solutions easily.
With "Gorogoa" I fear, its novelty factor might wear off to quickly, though.
And like mentioned before. I do not feel like being in the right mood for this game, yet.
So, what do you think about these two examples?
Or what were your reasonings on not to buy another game, yet?
Kind regards,
foxgog
