We always hear about what people purchased over sales, but...

What game was just one too many... or you just weren't quite ready to pull the cord by sales' end?

What game(s) did you pass up during the Halloween sale?
forum games :D

Everspace 2 still early access :(
Hello kai2!

Well observed, and I think it is an interesting topic. Maybe, posting here about individual game offers that we have passed up without purchasing yet, and why, could lead to interesting recommendations by the community.

Rather than listing all of the games I am continuing to wait for another opportunity, or the games which discount I did not considered enticing, let me mention here just two examples and my 'reasoning' on my decision:

First: "In Other Waters"
The concept and art design is really intriguing, the 50% discount was reasonable (in my opinion), but I pulled the trigger on "Still There" instead, which I am observing already for quite some time and finally convinced myself.
Both games do rely mainly on their HUD interface and on their narration (story). While "In Other Waters" seem to be more like a kinetic or visual novel (or maybe "walking simulator"), "Still There" has more actual puzzle elements--figuring out how things work and how to manipulate them.
So, I thought, I would give only one of them a try in the next couple of weeks. And get the other one later on, if I do like the experience.
(I know, it does not seem to be fair for the second game to be judged by my experience with another barely similar one. But nowadays I make my purchase decisions more based on my current gaming mood, if I would actually play the game sooner than later.)

And second: "Gorogoa"
I really loved the innovative and super creative puzzles from Gorogoa's demo many years ago. The 70% discount was great! Unfortunately, it is one of those experiences, which I propably would enjoy only once, and never come back to.
I do not mind playing even story focussed or point & click adventure games over and over again (the "Myst" series, the original "Broken Sword 1" and others, for instance) if they captured enough my imagination despite the fact, that I do memorize all the solutions easily.
With "Gorogoa" I fear, its novelty factor might wear off to quickly, though.
And like mentioned before. I do not feel like being in the right mood for this game, yet.

So, what do you think about these two examples?
Or what were your reasonings on not to buy another game, yet?

Kind regards,
foxgog

You should give Gorogoa a shot sometime, though. It's just short enough that the novelty didn't wear off for me, and it's a pretty unique experience for a game. I recommend it.

As for me, I passed on the sale for Outlast 2 because I still haven't gotten around to starting the first one(!) and, I passed on the DLC for Iron Harvest despite owning the base game because I also haven't really dug into it enough. Trying to play the games I own before buying too much more.

(that didn't stop me from picking up Just Cause 2 for $5 though).
For me...

The Halloween Sale had too many games that I'm interested in on sale all at once! So, I had to make some choices...

I recently started a thread on XCOM vs Phantom Doctrine and all were on sale! Even though I was interested, I passed on Phantom Doctrine (for now). I'd just heard too many mediocre reviews of the story to put it at the top of my list this sale (yes, I keep a spreadsheet of games color-coded by interest and price). I also passed on Xenonauts (for now). The gameplay looks great but the art style is a bit bland (the art style in X2's development looks much better). It's certainly worth the price, but I decided it was best to start with the most "accessible" of this genre first (XCOM Enemy Unknown). I felt this was probably the best "gateway drug" to this weird sub-genre of alien invasion tactical / management games.

I passed on what few military games saw discounts. Just not enticing enough discounts -- although that's sadly not unusual for that genre.

On the Halloween theme...

... I was all ready to purchase Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace, but didn't (yet)... even with the extra email discount. I play horror-related games every Halloween, but this year reality got in the way of fun IMHO (again... *grumble*). Plus, the reviews on Arkham Horror were rather mediocre... and I heard there is little to no re-play value. I decided to wait for the game to settle a bit lower... but plan to play it next Halloween (fingers crossed).

TBH, I started researching sale games and ended up watching a lot of Darkest Dungeon 2 and Phoenix Point playthroughs. Maybe I'm just getting old?

All of Wargaming.net and Ziggurat stuff. Discounts are meh, I heard those games had better ones fairly often, so I'd wait a bit.

Bloodstained, Encased, The Outer Worlds, Trine, and Pumpkin Jack because I already bought fifty games. I'd buy them yet, but there's no hurry.

Bloodstained is nice you should get this
The outer Worlds is just medicore
Pumpkin jack is for kids imho

but if you already got 50 games :O why that many? surely you wont be play them out
I past up Ghostrunner at 60% off because I read it's only 6 - 8 hours long and I don't like paying more than 1 dollar per hour of play-time, as doing that would seem like a ripoff to me.

Pretty much, even counting repeat purchases I have way more games than free time now. Plus, I spent way too much as it is.
So I'd grab those if I get discount mail, maybe grab Bloodstained even without come Black Friday or New Year since you recommended it, but otherwise I have plenty games to choose from and not enough time.

well first check it if you liek the genre out its music is awesome
I use gg.deals it has best deals part where it orders games based on expected return for value pretty good , and way easier to check gog deals too

It looks nice and I like Castlevania and Rockman-like platformers, so I don't think I'd be disappointed. Thanks for the gg.deals tip, it will be handy.
Since I didn't buy any, I guess the correct answer would be: all of them.

No good horror releases this year anyway. Still waiting for Lost in Vivo and White Day.
All of them.

Hello sergeant_citrus!

Thank you for your recommendation! I do not have a problem with short game length in general. Often, I actually prefer some shorter games, and it's more likely to revisit those, if they hooked me in the first playthrough.

Maybe, I should give "Gorogoa" finally a try at the next opportunity.

(Interesting, how frequently similar recommendations from various forum users here at GOG.com already have driven my buying decision more than anything else.)

Kind regards,
foxgog
Just Cause 2 but I got JC1 because I pirated it long ago
