kai2: Another "gimped" GOG version. Ugh... I can take a lack of MP on most games, but the inability to mod? I suspect this is just because GOG doesn't want to house user content on servers...? Should have picked up the games when they were $2 for the pack... now at $5? Dunno
avatar
Leroux: Not sure, might also be due to how the devs implemented it. But GOG should have put up a warning about it. When I pointed out that the game page on GOG actually advertised "Map Editor: Create new adventures and distribute them through Steamworks", they just deleted that line without replacement, without making clear that the GOG version lacks this feature.
Ugh... wish this sounded out of character for GOG. Oh well...

kai2: Wow... I'm going to have to go through this. A lot of titles I've never even heard of. Thanks!
Cheers! I recently voted for some top games thingies so I had some texts ready that I wrote for them.
Too many to list...

If I have to name three: Abe's Oddysee, Warcraft 3 and Dwarf Fortress

kai2: Yeah, I never played the Krondor games when they came out... but should now
Well, I'd say just BaK is the one to play, assuming you can deal with how dated it will now seem. RtK has nothing (relevant) to do with it. As for BiA, didn't play it, but from all I read it's just in the style of BaK but that's pretty much where the similarities end, nothing anywhere near when it comes to quality in any way, and of course not otherwise related to that world.

(And hmm, realized that StarCraft probably won't fit into fantasy, psionic abilities are arguably in the realm of possibility and the rest is quite clearly SF.)
Golden Axe and Gauntlet.

Leroux: I'm usually not much of a fan of Diablo-style ARPGs, they're alright, but often get pretty repetitive after a while; yet I did like Nox back in the days, for its slightly different, more arcade-y and story-focused approach, shorter length and varied content based on character class (haven't played it in ages though)
What about Grim Dawn? - while Diablo-ish, had a lot of story with a huge world with plenty of exploration. Was never boring and the Expansions only increased its value, in a good way.

Probably one of the most fun ARPGs I've ever played with lots of replay value. It was even more fun than Titan Quest IT, which is still one of my favorite all time favorites.

Dolbarg: Golden Axe and Gauntlet.
The amount of quarters I dropped into those games at the arcade. Pretty much ate up my allowance and anything else I could scourge up lol.

I would love to replay Warcraft 3 again, but my play disc went missing a long time ago...sigh. And I'd rather not buy the current version lol, unless Blizzard changes things.

kai2: Dragon's Dogma. The game that got me into fantasy, a genre that I actually disliked prior.
I've been wanting to install it for a while now, but have been putting it off to play other games. Part of it may be the jump attack style fighting I saw in the videos. They looked complicated to pull off.

Which made me hesitate since I'm not all that great with my 360 controller and using various combos. Which I actually bought to play a few slower paced games like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

Or does the game work well with a keyboard + mouse?

I have only played with a controller, so I can't really say...

... but the combat isn't as complicated as it might look. Like Devil May Cry, you settle into 2 or 3 moves that you'll use most often.

I've played some 25+ hours, then took a break and never got back to it. It was alright, if also a bit repetitive, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it anymore and/or distracted by something else when I took that break. It was definitely one of the better ones. I did manage to complete some Diablo-style ARPGs in my lifetime, including the original Diablo, Torchlight 2 and Titan Quest. Also Kult: Heretic Kingdoms, Nox and Divine Divinity, if those still count, although they were a lot more story-oriented. But for each one I completed, there are probably at least three others I abandoned...

Something else that wears me down in these games is the constant inventory management, comparing stats, deciding what to pick up, equip, keep, sell, throw away etc. The more complicated that gets and the more limited the inventory is, the more it takes away from my fun.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. However since I already bought the game, and because of Blizzard's shenanigans, in this case I don't feel guilty about torrenting the ISOs or using a cracked version.
Unfortunately I think the true widescreen version can only be found on battlenet :(

I did that with Diablo 2 + LOD not too long ago. Paid them the $20 directly through their website product page and then promptly left it alone and downloaded the Plugy version lol. This way I too felt that they got their money and I got my version of the game, minus the guilt. :)

I think that's pretty fair, since they didn't lose anything.

Come to think of it, they got my money several times. Two seperate retail copies of D2, then a copy of LOD. I think I even bought the battle chest or battle net (whatever it was called) version as well. Probably even more when the play discs got worn out. Geez, how many times did I buy this game lol.

Yup :) Though I didn't buy anything twice myself (that honor goes to Dawn of War - which I somehow ended up purchasing 3 times) , Blizzard is definitely the company that earned the most money off of me (sadly)

Sigh, that is probably one of my worst habits also when it comes to gaming.

I really need to either play them or uninstall them. So many icons all over my desktop screen every time I boot up my gaming drive lol.

Diver Down comes to mind. Fan made by Grenideer. Had lots of fun with this game. It was a surprise. Very glad to have found this gem. Puts to shame commercial RPG. The writing somehow makes you want to proceed and find out what happens next. The gameplay engages you. Good, good, good.

I really do not like that www.old-games.com copies the review from Home of the Underdogs without giving credit to Underdogs. That seems to be their way. I add links to that site since I am not sure if you can still download the game from Grenideer's site.

EDIT: Yes, you can! :-)

Another great fantasy game is Dark Disciples. Focused on the figure of the thief. Very good in a very different way. Exploration, puzzles, distinct episodes, and surprises galore.

As before, the second link is for downloading. Sadly, the creator's site went down some years ago.

Isle of Four Winds - Rune War mixes Mah Jong with fantasy strategy. You play a game of Mah Jong, and as you accomplish goals you get fantastic creatures that fight for you in a parallel battlefield. Very nice, and possibly the best mah jong game out there, or at least a very original one. For people who are curious about something new. This game is a gentle introduction to MJ: it will warn you when there are possibilities in your hand.
