Emob78: They both sucked. But at least Independence Day had some tongue in cheek humor and had fun with the ridiculousness of it all. War of the Worlds was a pointless rehash of a 60 year old low-budget classic.

When Spielberg gets around to directing a remake of Manos Hands of Fate, let me know.

tinyE: He'd fuck it up by using CGI for the Manos robe. Trust me! :P
That and the Master would have to become the Mistress to please modern femi-audiences. Oh, and Torgo would also have to be addicted to some AA therapy groups and have unspoken family abuse issues that need addressing (sometime before the final plot climax). Finally, all of the shots of the car pointlessly wandering through boring Texas back country would have to be replaced by shots of precocious youngsters dancing to hip-hop and jerking off robots that look like Jesus shat a mobo.

Plus where are they going to make it?

"You aren't gonna film 'Manos Hands of Fate' in our town!"

Lolling: In short I'm the only one, when I was a kid obviously, who found General Grievous a sort of badass villain? At least esthetically? I still remember the moment he start to use four light sabers!
In the cartoon, he absolutely was. In the movie? Nope. He was not nearly as scary, intimidating, or effective. And worst of all, he served absolutely no purpose in that movie, he had had nothing to do with the plot, and unless you've seen the cartoon, he came right the fuck out of nowhere to clutter up the movie.

Nah, that sounds more like George Lucas or Hobbit-era Peter Jackson.

tinyE: I have just gotten tired of defending myself from the fact that, as shit as they were at times, I really loved those movies.
At times?! They were shit ALL the time. Revenge of the Sith actually has the distinction of being one of few movies I can think of that does not have a single, solitarty redeeming thing about it. Nothing works in that movie. Not a single scene, character, nothing. I mean, even in Prometheus you have Fassbender's android character with a few good scenes. It does not save the movie from being utter shit, but you can find something about that's half-decent, if you really feel like being generous.

See what I mean? :P

I love em and I don't care, and there are peanuts in my shit ready for feasting by anyone who doesn't like it! :P

The location isn't half as important as the Manos fundamentals. Any low-budget remake must stick to the Manos rules.

1 - Direct the film only after making a drunken bet with a close friend. Plot and cast is secondary to making the production budget and deadline limits.

2 - $17,000 budget, not a penny more.

3 - No shots in the film can last longer than 32 seconds due to the cheap film cameras you bought at a local swap meet.

4 - No film permits are allowed. You get caught filming in town without em', you gotta cough up the dough to bail yourself out.

5 - Retakes aren't allowed. You've got 17k to work with. Just film a single take and move on! We're burning daylight here!

6 - The director must also produce, write, edit, and star in the film.

Now... if only they'd apply those same rules to the new Star Wars movies. We might just be onto something then.

You're not being entirely fair. Manos is a 1966 movie. That's like 120.000 $ now.

Screw inflation. Give Spielberg a real challenge. If Turkey can do it, so can Steve!

Grammer Nazi :P
It probably won't have Jedi riding giants lizards, it most definitely won't have Jar Jar Binks and it's thankfully not directed by George Lucas, so we're all good right?

I realized The Empire Strikes Back, arguably the most well considered Star Wars wasn't even directed by George Lucas. Directed by Irvin Kershner.

I don't really care, it's just an FYI because I happened to notice that you've been consistently misspelling this word for years.

Yeah but this will be by JJ Abrams....

Breja: Honestly, much as I like the Dark Forces\Jedi Knight games, I never really treated any of that as really in canon with the movies. Same goes for the rest of the Extended Universe. And really, it would have been impossible to make any new movies dragging all that baggage. The only retcon that makes no sense to me is making the original Clone Wars cartoon non canon. Not only was it way better than the prequel movies, but also without it Revenge of the Sith makes even less sense.
Honestly, I never did either, but for the exactly opposite reason: I never cared much for the movies, for me Star Wars means Jedi Knight and KOTOR. All the other stuff, I don't give a damn about.

I don't have any problem with the guy, if you were to come up with a list of most impressive new directors that are continuing carrying the torch from Spielberg, George Lucas and Ridley Scott you might come up with something like, Christopher Nolan (I don't think he would take the job), Joss Whedon (He has Marvel), Zach Snyder (Has the DC universe) and JJ Abrams (Successfully rebooted Star Trek and Mission Impossible...)

From a film making perspective he's a great choice, in my opinion that doesn't really matter that much.

Mission Impossible 3 was complete badassery compressed into two hours.
In a nutshell, I am expecting to be blown away by the visuals and crushingly disappointed by the plot.
