The GamersGate thread is closed. Trolls first, then the Spam.

They'll get to it, just relax.

That really was a great surprise, and after that I'm more then willing to wait as long as it takes with spam.

Grargar: They tried doing so by restricting newly-created accounts from creating threads until they made a purchase. Obviously, it didn't work.
Source?

Me neither.

We tried something with the spam function that didn't seem to work out the way we hoped it would, so it's gonna be reverted back. If you guys come across anything spammy in the meantime, please PM me and I'll deal with it manually.

Source.

From the wording of it, though, it seems that the restriction is lifted not with a purchase as I originally remembered, but just by acquiring a game that isn't normally free.

I haven't tested it, but the stated description is even looser: by acquiring a game that isn't part of the initial freebie package with each new account. So just adding another free game to the account that didn't start there might be enough.

Cheers. I love this part:

t should rid us entirely of spam
Yep, most definitely did; the state of the forum is living proof.

Is this still in effect? It was supposed to be a temp solution, and that was two years ago... nothing is more permanent than the temporary, eh?

Not even going to ask what happened to "other solutions" GOG was working on. At least someone finally took care of the recent flood.

Hmm... the post clearly speaks of "purchasing games", and I hope that it doesn't refer to going through the process of obtaining a game.

Seeing the fate of the GG thread, should I just report everything I find offensive from now on? Maybe pursue whining about those things for a few months as well? And will calling any group I hate a hate group also make them harmful enough to be banned from discussion?

The linked post does not actually talk about spending money: "it is no longer possible to create a forum thread if you only have the set of free games you get upon registration in your game library"

If there are free games that aren't in that comes-with-registration-set, then no money needs to be spent to bypass this check. You just need to know that it exists, and go find a free game.

Considering this is a gaming forum.....YES, YOU SHOULD! :D

It doesn't? Let me check again [emphasis added]:
We have added another preventative measure to battle the many spambots that have been attacking our forums - it is no longer possible to create a forum thread if you only have the set of free games you get upon registration in your game library (adding posts to existing topics is not affected). This should rid us entirely of unwanted spam threads, as spambots will be unable and/or unwilling to purchase games.
The question is if going through the checkout process to add one of the free games that's not included in the set that is automatically added to a new account counts as purchasing a game.

On some levels (like sending purchase receipt emails) going through the checkout process with a free game counts. I just figure that the lazier/easier implementation would simply be to check whether an account has any games besides [registration freebies] when a user tries to create a new thread.

So baisically another GG thread only much shorter lived?
