Shadowstalker16: Seeing the fate of the GG thread, should I just report everything I find offensive from now on? Maybe pursue whining about those things for a few months as well? And will calling any group I hate a hate group also make them harmful enough to be banned from discussion?
avatar
Narakir: I don't see why any true GGer would be against it, closing the thread is one step to keep politics away from video games.
Politics shouldn't be kept away from games. No one wants that. Reviewers should keep their politics to political articles though, not reviews.

tremere110: It will spill out into other threads without a single place to contain them. This one for instance. Thanks TinyE :p

Breja: 1. How about thanking the people who can't have a normal conversation rather than a toxic dump of a thread instead. It's they who forced GOG to finaly enforce some rules here.

2. I'm sick and tired of this logic of acquiescence to trolls. As it turns out, we can have moderation here, and don't have to have "containment threads" in hopes the toxicity will be so nice as to stay within their boundires (spoiler- it never does)- we can simply be rid of it all, and good riddance.
1. Then people will be complaining about spam on the front page of the forum. I say ''containment'' as in keep similar topics together, ie EU refugee crisis news, etc. And judging from how much people got triggered about the infowars thread, multiple topics of the ''wrong'' content won't stay up very long before people cry about spam.

2. Yeah, warn ban or mute the individuals, not close the thread and stop everyone from talking. Thread locking has no permanence when it comes to keeping out the trolls.

Also lol at your idea of containment.

The gamergate thread needed to be closed because it was a literal asshole magnet. Several people only came here for that hate fest. Those have now left, it seems, to 8chan or wherever, without even the need to ban them. So don't anybody tell me this wasn't an effective measure. It was far, far, far more effective than I even dared to hope. Still just a baby step for this forum, of course.

A "containment thread" would of course undoubtedly just be a continuation of the gamergate thread, attracting the same people spouting the same alt-right conspiracy theories, alt-right fake news, alt-right outrage and hate generation, alt-right celebrity celebration, alt-right enemy concepts and alt-right enemy harassment organisation, and e.g. the usual quasi-religious gamergate creation myths.

A "containment thread" is a measure suggested by community managers when literally all is lost, in hopes they can have a thread in a remote part of their forum ("general chat") the asshole magnet of which is so incredibly strong that it keeps assholes in that one thread, but so weak that it doesn't attract assholes from the rest of the internet.

In short, a "containment thread" is the last step before the forum is closed entirely.

I don't think i ever even opened that thread.

No, you opened another, basically the same alt-right xenophobic conspiracy hate fest; but at least you were always honest in your assessment that you made yourself the mere mouthpiece of alt-right propaganda organs, and that you had no deeper knowledge of any of the laughable headlines you dumped in there. You know well the compassion and the slack I cut you because I considered you a troubled propaganda victim.

Perhaps. Only time will tell if it was all propaganda, or if it was real and everyone else is convinced it's propaganda.

But I'd rather not get into it and divert the thread off again. Besides until my brain switches tracks again, I can't put the same effort into the daily posting as I did before.
I'm seeing a pattern here. What Vainia hates but cannot find a rational reason for, he prefixes with ''alt-right''.

What if a political message in a game completely ruins the experience for you because it hurts your values and you simply can't continue to play like let's say the pro-LGBT tidbits in Dragon Age : Inquisition? Isn't it relevant to someone's experience?

That is something to take up with the developers, don't you think.

Then the section should be skipped / modded out. You see, I argue based on creative freedom. Ie creators should be free to put in anything they want; ''diversity'' or ''toxic masculinity'' or ''unrealsstic body images''or SJWism be damned and their creations should have a chance to compete on the market, where the consequences of their decisions can manifest in commercial success / failure. If the game is an SJW shitfest and it can't be modded out, then it is part of the experience and people won't buy it.

The incitement to hate and violence of Alex Jones and the whining about "SJW"s or "political correctness", i.e. communicative strategies that helped elect Donald Trump, are generally associated with the alt-right movement.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/nov/30/political-correctness-how-the-right-invented-phantom-enemy-donald-trump

In the gamer wing of the alt-right movement, the idea that "people won't buy SJW games" is not consistently believed in. In fact, many seem to think that they have to slander and lie about a game and its creators before the game loses enough sales that it fits their world view.

Meanwhile the storytellers among the game developers don't give a flying shit about gamergate's "protection" of their creative freedom, as they have understood the issues and the criticism correctly right from the very start.
https://twitter.com/grumpygamer/status/523170468275056640

Finding "pro-LGBT tidbits" so appalling that the mere detail in a game ruins your enjoyment of the whole work of art, calling for the removal or modding of the game just because "pro-LGBT tidbits" are portrayed, or slandering and decrying of a game just because of those "pro-LGBT tidbits" is what we call homophobia.

No one forces you to buy these games, but whining about them online just because they aren't a sexual fantasy wish fulfillment machinery perfectly adapted to exactly your preferences is pathetic.
