kharille: Theres also a humour wiki. I can't remember, its 4chan or something but damned funny especially their criticism of some of the fluff writers. One entry was about some all powerful grey knight chapter master I remember.
Yes its here..
https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Ork Heard people say they love 1 but it seemed to lack character or storyline. I'm sure it had more interesting features like base building and vehicles but somehow the storyline in 2 worked for me, and the voice acting.
I'll try space marine when it goes on sale. Watched a letsplay which didn't engage me. Seemed to remind me of 3rd person dynasty warriors games.
Martyr eh? Will check it out.
Used to be an old 1st edition rogue trader table top fan page by pontius somebody, and the eastern fringe forums which is now active, but original rogue trader table top from the 80s had its fan base...
1d4chan is great fun but beware. It contains a lot of PROMOTIONS!!! and NSFW. Luckily, it is usually clearly marked :).
Dawn of War 1 and Winter Assault have good storyline. Dark Crusade and Soulstorm were unfortunately reduced to a conquest type game where 75% of it are just skirmishes. There are some story bits in strongholds where the commanders bicker with each other. DoW 2 also references some of the happenings of Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. Davian Thule was the commander of the Space Marines in Dark Crusade and he sometimes talks about it. Also Cyrus at one point says that Kaurava campaign was a complete failure due to the incompetence of Commander Boreale and caused the chapter huge casualties.
The canonical endings are:
DoW 1 - Space Marines win as they are the only one you can play as in campaign. Ends with a warpstorm consuming Tartarus and a greater daemon being released (this is important for DoW2: Retribution).
DoW: WA - Eldar win, references to that are in Dark Crusade where the Imperial Guard commander has a grudge against Taldeer for what happened on Lorn V. Also, she dies in all other endings so she couldn't be in Dark Crusade.
DoW: Dark Crusade - Space Marines win. Thule is in Dawn of War 2 and talks about it a decent amount. They recovered a lot of their chapter relics from Cronus. Probably the most important thing for the future games is that Taldeer is eventually killed by the Space Marines after being captured and interrogated (that explains her appearance in DoW 3 as a Wraithknight after the Eldar recover her soulstone.
DoW: Soulstorm - Imperial guard most likely win. Based on the endings, it is most likely since their ending says that they treated the remaining Space Marines and Sisters of Battle with respect and sent them back to their Segmentum Command. That would explain how Cyrus survived since he says in DoW 2 he was on Kaurava (and witnessed Boreale's incompetence).
Matewis: ** Up to Dark Crusade... Why on god's green earth they made the final expansion about SotB and DE instead of Tyranids I'll never know. Not to mention the jammed in flying units and weird mana abilities of the new factions.
I think I read somewhere that it was because they were already working on Dawn of War 2 and were saving the Tyranids for that game (that is why Soulstorm was made by Iron Lore and not Relic as they were already developing DoW2 by that time). The flying units were forced upon them by the publisher (they required something new to be put in the game) and originally were not intended to be there. So they suddenly had to work on flying units, forcing them into the game and didn't have time to fine tune it since they had to hastily release it. And you can clearly see the result, in voice acting for example. Most of the game's dialogue is Scott McNeil having conversations with himself, just in different version of his voice. And without the huge fan made
bugfix mod, the game was in a pretty bad state.
I would say the new factions are okay. At least the global abilities are something different and distinguishes them from the others.
And the battles in DoW and the expansions are some of the most immersive I have ever seen in an RTS.
