That's okay. I'm pretty sure that GabeN or some Valve employee made an obscure post somewhere saying that if the Steam Box ever failed they could release a patch or something.

zeogold: Er...could somebody explain to me what these things are? I'm familiar with the controller, but these, I never heard about.
i already did
they are pc's in a console shell front loaded with steam os which is a linux off shoot
to provide linux gaming

there are not very many high profile games

It might have sucked performancewise, but it looked so damn cool.

I don't know.

I think it's kind of creepy looking.

It was a good idea but way overpriced to get when consoles in that range could outperform them graphics wise.

Maybe if amd and nvidia's new graphics increase will make mid range and low range mobile gpu's have crack at quality close to the consoles for a cheap price.

I have a friend who bought the alienware steam console and 2 months later he sold it saying it had such a hard time playing games on medium to high and was 899.99 before tax.... just goes to show.

no no no
that is the xbox one
At least the Steam Controller has enjoyed a moderate success. I've thought about one myself. But I wonder what's next?

mistermumbles: No big surprise there. I pretty much expected those to tank right when they first announced them.

Also, SteamOS. Pfft. Yes, Valve is the savior of PC Gaming and will rescue you from the evil that is Microsoft Windows... and the walled garden that never really happened. Want some more smoke blown up your butt? Yes, please!
The only people Valve have rescued are those overly defiant and stubborn Linux users. That whole 1.5% of the OS marketshare, you know? :P
Initially I wanted one because I want a small enough portable desktop and a large screen.

I want a PC that is portable enough to carry through airports, and a large enough screen so it is easy on the eyes.

The current laptop biggest screen size is 18.4 inch. So I figure if have a small enough desktop like the steam machine and a 24 / 27 inch monitor, it will fit my needs nicely. However seeing the hardware and the price. I am wondering why I don't buy a laptop and use said monitor instead.

A windows steam machine with a GAEMS monitor probably comes out to cheaper over a laptop with equivalent performance ($1,200 vs $1,700+?)

Which window steam machine? What's the size?

I know the Syber's have a gtx 960 one for around $800. You might be able to get that bumped to a 1070. They're pricier but OriginPC has a lot more options and a better warranty though. Sizes are in numbers and letters, meaning you're on your own. :P

snowkatt: seriously
7 months later the platform sold less then half a million units
showcasing that there is absolutely no demand or interest in the product

it might even be lower
because the half a million number is the number of steam controller sold and these include the controllers packaged with every steam machine sold

these arent exactly numbers that will set the world alight
or for that matter worry windows or even mac os X

will valve kil this thing quietly or wil they stubbornly continue pushing it ?

article can be found here >> http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/06/its-time-to-declare-valves-steam-machines-doa/
The phrase from the article "a solution in search of a problem" sums it up well. After all those years and all that money Valve spent developing, prototyping, and refining controllers, one would think they would have at least had a good controller for Steam Machines. But instead, the controller is probably one of the things which has been criticized the most. I wish Valve would devote a larger percentage of their resources to actually making video games!

tinyE: I'd like to compare those numbers with that of the NES Power Glove when it came out and see what tanked harder. :P
Lol, back in the day I bought my nephews a power glove, no wonder they hate me.

Thanks I will check it out.
