Experiment513: Hmm, can't say I have any problems with the download speeds from GOG. Although I'm on the European continent as well. My download speed is around the 4 to 5 Mb/s. I think that's also about the maximum of my connection.
LOL in my country the max you can get it's a 7MB ADSL (so 700 kb/s)...for me gog it's ok LOL
Seems Australia is infamous by having slowest internet download speeds among the developed nations! Highest on cable for Steam is 1.4MB/s...I cannot remember in the last 5 years of ever seeing my downloads getting over 1.4MB/s...and I live in Sydney metro area...with a cable internet with Telstra. Just so you all know: if you decide to come for a Holiday down here, be prepared for internet speed frustration!

mad2gamer: I have been Steam user for over 5 years and most of the time download speed is between 1MB/s to 1.4MB/s ...on rare occasion it drops to 500KB/s. With GOG downloads I get max 1.2MB/s but mostly around 300KB/s to 600KB/s and as low as 50KB/s...Considering how many people use Steam, 10-12 Million every day, GOG has no excuse to keep them so low!
I live in Australia and have Cable internet!
So, why is this so?
I'm going to say rather biasedingly, that you are spoiled... :P

I just got my internet fixed and we can get up to 700k/s and it's pretty amazing... and yet... i wasn't missing it when i was only getting 120k/s, rather i probably don't use more than 250k/sec 99% of the time so i don't really see WHY i would need it faster, except we'd always had slower/broken internet so going faster doesn't really change much. The only things it DOES change, is if i download something usually the download caps at 300k/s or so, and my GF can watch her 1-2 live streams at the same time without even noticing i'm hogging nearly half the internet for a few minutes at a time...

The only time you need a high internet speed is if you need something downloaded RIGHT NOW!!!, otherwise even something a few gigs in size, or several will download overnight if you start the download before going to bed, or before you go to work...

But we live in a world and culture where we want instant gratification, and taking 2 days to cook your food is unheard of anymore and most people would rather drive to the store, buy pizza at a marked up price (or have it delivered) than take the 15 minutes of actual attention it takes to prep food in bulk. (My example involves soaking beans in water and then cooking them in a crokpot for a few hours, of which only 15 minutes is actual attention you give the food... And it tastes sooooooo good!)
I used to DL 700mb movies on a 26.4kbps dial-up connection. Now, THAT took a while.

mad2gamer: Maybe this is specific to Australian GOG users??? Can other Aussies tell me their experience please...
My internet has a hard time hitting a max 500kb/s. It's because of my distance to the exchange. I've always been able to have fastest possible speeds with GOG downloads though.

Yup, true for most people! But not all, of course. I spend at least 3 hours a day on food-prep probably 4-5 days a week (some days I have off because of all the prep I do on other days allows me to have leftovers that I can prepare in a matter of minutes, which is crucial!) The only time I get pizza it is a luxury and we have to make it from scratch. It's still "in bulk" in a way, as, we usually make 2 large pizzas that last about a week+ for two people. I totally agree, the instant gratification society we live in is ridiculous. It's made even worse by people being attached to their "smart-devices" who think instantaneous is better for everything.

Hmmm although to note, once the beans are made and tasty and spiced up and ready to go, that's about 2 weeks of food... So the remainder of my meal preparations is about 2 minutes per plate...

Smart devices.. i prefer mine dumb and that do what i tell them to do...

Heh... i'm reminded of a conversation not that long ago. I'm considering walking across a few states to visit where i was born. Because i won't have easy access to electrical sockets, and probably won't be staying at hotels (since i'll be hitch-hiking the whole way) my GF found it utterly and totally inconceivable for me to go without a cell phone...

And here i figured get in shape walking, maybe get hungry enough to do some rabbit/squirrel hunting, get some of my skills up for the eventual grid crash...

edit: Prefer my programs to remain dumb

That's a great way to do it! We do similar with a veggie-bean soup as well that is about 10 meals.

YEAH! Of course you have to be safe in this world still (take a good stick and a knife, be smart with who picks you up!), but that sounds like a great idea, to get out there and BE ALIVE and see what you can do in this world on your own. If you're lucky you can sneak up on some groundhog, they are much easier to catch than rabbit or squirrel. Fishing is a great way to do it too if you like fish (I can't stand them.) Bait is easily catch-able most anywhere, but of course you have to be aware of authorities or have a license. But, yeah, I like how you think!

Fishing would be preferred, but i'm not expecting much in the way of lakes and rivers i can fish at in the middle of the US...

I also got for hunting, an air rifle. Although apparently the break barrel for this model takes a lot more effort than other rifles, tempted to take it back and swap it as i haven't opened the box yet, but otherwise it's a small hunting weapon that doesn't rely on gunpowder...

Geralt_of_Rivia: The problem must be on your end. I usually get 12-17.5 MB/s from the GOG servers.
Probably or perhaps the server software is putting him in the wrong region. I notice from time to time that I wind up with weird languages before I log in. And logging in is horribly unreliable as there's some weird stuff that goes wrong with the log in scripts.

It wouldn't surprise me if sometimes the servers made a mistake about which CDN server to use.

Theoretically since GOG uses a CDN, the download rate really ought to be quite high.
I expected a bit more common sense kind of response to my post and a few of posts did...but why on earth are 2 usa people turning this post into conversation about food, hunting and ``greenie`` runt?
From what I can see, in general, some Europeans have far better internet speeds than the rest of the world.
To the Austrian `Geralt_of_Rivia`: I live in Australia NOT Austria, so please consider your words: ``The problem must be on your end. I usually get 12-17.5 MB/s from the GOG servers.``
To `Matruchus` from Slovenia: I envy your internet speed...
To `rtcvb32` from USA: It is amazing to see how arrogance and ignorance can make you feel righteous in telling other people what they need>``The only time you need a high internet speed is if you need something downloaded RIGHT NOW!!!, otherwise even something a few gigs in size, or several will download overnight if you start the download before going to bed, or before you go to work...`` Wow, it must make you proud and green all over to shove your unwanted wisdom down other peoples throat! I am sure people just cannot stop admiring your self-righteous and zelaous nature! I am so happy for you! While you are in a mood, why don`t you tell me how I am doing everything wrong, since I am a full time carer of a mentally and physically disabled person, who never gets a day off, had no Holiday in 23 years and whose only entertainment/connection to the world is my laptop! I would love to hear more of your lovely criticism: ``I'm going to say rather biasedingly, that you are spoiled... :P`` OH, thank you, it makes my heart sing!
BTW, I must shamefully admit that I cook, wash, clean and fix most of house repairs....Yeah, I am so spoiled...Thank the Lord for people like you to put me in a right place!

I've never had a problem with download speed.

*sigh* It doesn't really matter what i say, does it? What was really intended as a playful little jab followed by just a little bit of logic of how i didn't see why quote "1.2MB/s but mostly around 300KB/s to 600KB/s and as low as 50KB/s" is a bad thing.

Maybe i grew up in the wrong era; In the 90's when you could only copy data via floppy 1.44Mb disks within your own home; Or using dialup/telephone where my first experiences was 14KBaud (about 1.2k/sec), up to the almighty limit of 56KBaud (5-6k/sec), and before that my computer was an 8-bit Atari.

I guess my minimal standards (for speed/video/entertainment) are still set at a much lower/slower pace. And they always will be...
Recently I've noticed that the download speeds from GOG have been very slow. Is there too much server load on GOG's side?
