morolf: haha, that's true. Also not the smartest guy in other situations, iirc there's one part where he opens a door with his blowtorch and then runs directly into the firing line of an automated gun turret :-)
Yeah, one would think HL's
trained soldiers would check rooms more carefully before entering. o.0 :)
morolf: Still, I liked those parts where you had small squads fighting at your side.
Yeah, that was nice.....a similar mechanic is also used in a console game I play/like called Urban Chaos(medics/firefighters/etc help the player along the way).
morolf: Was a bit of a cop-out though that you crashed before you got the orders to kill the scientists, so you never had to make the choice whether to follow those orders...
Well i'm guessing Shepard more or less figured out their orders after a time(due to things like the scientists stating such), so it seems like he still got to make that choice.
morolf: I've only played System Shock 2. It's a good game and I finished it, but I'm not sure I enjoyed it that much...it succeeds really well at creating a constant feeling of tension...you're isolated on this huge ship (you never meet any friendly characters at all, you're on your own throughout the entire game, which creates a truly oppressive atmosphere) and you're never safe, because enemies keep respawning and move around. It's the only game I can think of where I made sure I had my back to a wall when looking through my inventory, to make sure nothing could surprise me from behind.
I think everybody interested in video games should at least try it once, but be prepared, it's an intense experience :-)
Yeah, it's a very decent game that I think all fans of such themes/genres should try once. It can be a fun experience and it still looks/plays good today.....even more so with the various graphics mods which bump up the resolution of the original textures/skyboxes/weapons/etc quite a bit.
As for tension: it becomes less so later on, once one has a bunch of items/skills/weapons under their belt. Also for those not too into the tension, players can turn down the respawns/weapon degradation/etc with some tweaking in the config files.

Side note on fan campaigns(to all): there are some nice ones to give the game more replay value and whatnot, like Return to UNN and also the 4 Christine FMs(fan mods).
