bluethief: Has anyone played and recommends any of these? I know GamezRanker highly praises System Shock 2, so that one is already covered ;)
I've only played System Shock 2. It's a good game and I finished it, but I'm not sure I enjoyed it that much...it succeeds really well at creating a constant feeling of tension...you're isolated on this huge ship (you never meet any friendly characters at all, you're on your own throughout the entire game, which creates a truly oppressive atmosphere) and you're never safe, because enemies keep respawning and move around. It's the only game I can think of where I made sure I had my back to a wall when looking through my inventory, to make sure nothing could surprise me from behind.
I think everybody interested in video games should at least try it once, but be prepared, it's an intense experience :-)
Probably a bad are to live in. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Indeed. Does a great job at creating that atmosphere and always making you feel unsafe and lacking, well, everything... Which was why I couldn't stand it and gave up quite quickly when I gave it a go. All those constant respawns of enemies that tend to drop less than you use to dispatch them and the way upgrades work, that same "currency"... Just... no.

morolf: haha, that's true. Also not the smartest guy in other situations, iirc there's one part where he opens a door with his blowtorch and then runs directly into the firing line of an automated gun turret :-)
Yeah, one would think HL's trained soldiers would check rooms more carefully before entering. o.0 :)

avatar
morolf: Still, I liked those parts where you had small squads fighting at your side.
Yeah, that was nice.....a similar mechanic is also used in a console game I play/like called Urban Chaos(medics/firefighters/etc help the player along the way).

morolf: Was a bit of a cop-out though that you crashed before you got the orders to kill the scientists, so you never had to make the choice whether to follow those orders...
Well i'm guessing Shepard more or less figured out their orders after a time(due to things like the scientists stating such), so it seems like he still got to make that choice.

Yeah, it's a very decent game that I think all fans of such themes/genres should try once. It can be a fun experience and it still looks/plays good today.....even more so with the various graphics mods which bump up the resolution of the original textures/skyboxes/weapons/etc quite a bit.

As for tension: it becomes less so later on, once one has a bunch of items/skills/weapons under their belt. Also for those not too into the tension, players can turn down the respawns/weapon degradation/etc with some tweaking in the config files.

-

Side note on fan campaigns(to all): there are some nice ones to give the game more replay value and whatnot, like Return to UNN and also the 4 Christine FMs(fan mods).

bluethief: I never played it on a controller. Tbh, I play almost every game with M&K.

I told you about the keyboard, because I remember the first time I played it, it was on a cheap one and I also failed some wall jumps. This time, with a much better one, I had no problem at all.
The game runs fine with controller, I just forget how to time the jumping right sometimes when I play.
And yeah, I also like M&K more, but am ok with controller for console games. :)

bluethief: Looking at the list, there are a couple of games that I'd like to try out:

- Requiem: Avenging Angel

Has anyone played and recommends any of these? I know GamezRanker highly praises System Shock 2, so that one is already covered ;)
Requiem is a decent game.....I played a bit of it long ago(and then lost the save data for it when one of my older PCs failed, and forgot to go back) and found it decent enough(Iirc it has a similar "mood/tone" as Shadow Man).

As for System Shock 2: as I said above, there are some nice graphics mods for it(which mainly make the original graphics more high res) & also some nice SP fan missions as well.

That's true, by the final third or so I had acquired two assault rifles and lots of ammo, so it turned more into a conventional shooter, and actually was a bit boring. But the feeling of isolation (reinforced by the level architecture) stayed throughout.
I'm pretty sure System Shock 2 would be right up my alley, it being an immersive sim. The problem is, these type of games are very time consuming, and right now I'm giving preference to shorter ones. That's why I've been postponing my playthrough of games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

I know what ya mean....one is still somewhat on edge watching for enemies(like them spiders) throughout most of the game.
(well, minus times when one finds one of the safe areas....ex: on top of crates in the cargo bay or the shuttle bay control room)

System Shock 2 isn't actually too long...even if one explores all areas. Now if one replays it again and again, then it becomes a time sink. ;)

While i'm here, some news for all time travellers and those reading the thread:

ScummVM has added Crusader: No Remorse and several games GOG sells as dosbox versions to their latest update(s). Owners of such games on GOG might want to backup their dosbox versions in case GOG ever decides to "upgrade" said games to ScummVM only versions. (the full list of games is in the news feed on the main ScummVM page)

Does the game have multiple endings, depending on what decisions you make along the way?

The game has one ending, and it's well....you'd see if you played(they had to make the cutscene/end-game short and not as good as they were running out of money near the end of production). Still, it is imho a rather decent game all in all....despite the flaws.

Side note: there is a SP campaign mod(called System Shock Infinite, iirc) that modifies the main game to have different endings(one around the middle of the game, even, if one figures out how/when to do it), but it is more recommended for after one plays at least once through the vanilla game.

I kinda always prefer to play the games in their original form, and only use mods for fixing things like resolutions, bugs, etc.

My mistake.....I meant fan campaign(s). That said, I get what ya mean.
(I play some mods, but mostly AFTER playing the original versions of games first)
I started replaying Unreal Tournament on skilled difficulty.
