Maxvorstadt: Well, maybe not in every genre, still trying to find something good in german Volksmusik!
avatar
ValamirCleaver: I don't know specifically you mean by German folk music, but the German speaking people have a great musical heritage that have greatly affected the Western World. Here's a very short and woefully incomplete list off the top of my head; Oswald von Wolkenstein, Walther von der Vogelweide, Reinmar von Hagenau, Dieterich Buxtehude, Heinrich Schütz[, Johann Schein, Samuel Scheidt, Georg Philipp Telemann, Richard Wagner, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Gustav Mahler, Franz Joseph Haydn, Christoph Straus, Johann Baptist Strauss Sr., Johann Baptist Strauss Jr., Richard Strauss, Josef Strauss, et cetera...

If you mean more modern music; from the late '60s to early '70s there's Amon Düül, , [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDrsy2kiYJs]Nektar, , [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXOouJbe3ck]Ash Ra Tempel, Cosmic Jokers, Tangerine Dream, , [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OLdpWLrzuM]Kraftwerk, Cluster, and so on.

In more mainstream rock there's the , [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXxk_YnfrS8]Accept, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Schenker, , [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31YhCU6GAME]Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, , [url=https://youtu.be/OkCpJt6KloI?t=36s]Edguy, Running Wild, Iron Savior, Angel Dust, , [url=https://youtu.be/JeK1xCaMqqA?t=38s]Freedom Call.

I realize that I've mainly focused on classical music, progressive rock, mainstream heavy/power/progressive/symphonic metal; but that's because that is to what I primarily listen along with blues and classic rock.
Well, you don`t know Volksmusik! Ever heard of "Original Nabtal Duo" (some call it "Original Napalm Duo"), "Musikantenstadl" and other dangers for mankind?
Oh, and by the way: Helloweens album "Keeper of the seven keys" was one of the greatest albums in the history of metal. :-)

Tarm: You have a very wide view on what rap is...
I'm not trying to claim that all that is rap, that would be a false equivalency. I was listing small subset of things in rap that interest me. The Slayer reference was because She Watch Channel Zero?! samples Angel of Death, I even cued up the video to start at the part of the song that was sampled instead of the beginning of the performance. Anthrax recorded a cover of Bring the Noise with Public Enemy. Body Count, which is fronted by Ice-T, is a /[url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metalcore#Metallic_hardcore_.281990s.29]hardcore band. Obviously the R&B/funk artists to which I linked that have been a source of samples for raps songs are not rap itself nor are groups like Breakestra that play covers of those earlier R&B/funk songs.

I got a couple false reply starts and now I have decided on the following answer.

That's too much thinking for me. Either I like a song, tune or any other piece of music or I don't. Music is emotions. That is something that should not be analysed too much. Also now my head hurts. *wimper*

Oh, you mean German popular music that purposely avoids influences from popular American or UK music. Now I got, I think.

I've known that for a long time, those 2 albums were released almost 30 years ago. I got to see Helloween co-headline with Gamma Ray at the House of Blues back in 2008, they both performed together an extended version of I Want Out as the encore.

Well, in Germany there is a the thinking that music can be divided in two different areas: "U-Musik" which means music to enjoy, and "E-Musik" which is "serious" music which is not meant to enjoyed, but to be analized and taken serious. This goes especially for classic music.

That's what you get when mixing psychopaths and music. :/

Interesting - but I don't really like this division! The underlying assumtion (which is rather wide-spread) is that all the low-brow stuff don't take any effort, and thus, isn't worth analyzing. For instance, nobody would bother analyzing NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE, but everybody automatically goes into analyzing mode on Triers ANTI CHRIST.
But making a comedy which works is super hard. It take skill to make something easily digested by the viewer/listener.
Rap's not that bad and can be used as a legitimate art form, I'm just personally put off by all the swearing and the bizarre emphasis on this "gansta" nonsense. It just ruins it for me unless there's some sort of decent story behind it.

NoNewTaleToTell: *misquoting*
Methinks somebody is a bit upset over my comment.
I'm just saying I don't care for all the fake stuff. Talk about who you are and quit pretending like you're some sort of actual thug.
Perhaps I just haven't seen the right artist, but this seems to happen all too often.

Not quite "upset" more like bored and pointing out a general double standard.

Rap itself is as a broad and nuanced as any other genre, and "gangsta rap" is only one subgenre of it. There are plenty of rappers and rap songs that have absolutely NOTHING to do with anything "gangsta", if you'd like to listen?

Yes, I would.
Perhaps I was too subtle with what I was saying. I was semi-baiting hoping that my comment would cause somebody to come forward and show me a rap song that isn't what I described
