Well gee, can we talk about tennis? lol

Probably not. People are still upset with tennis for sanctioning that woman for breaking the rules.

Personally, I think it was completely appropriate to actually punish a woman for breaking the rules.

I agree, and it has nothing to do with sexism. I felt the same way about Connors and McEnroe when they behaved poorly.

It's whataboutism. She did break the rules and the penalties applied were in keeping with the rules that the governing body has. Whether these should be rules and whether they're being evenly enforced isn't relevant to the question about whether or not the punishment was appropriate.

Some sports like this that have historically been more of an upper class thing have some rather goofy rules. Reminds me of the golfer that was prevented from playing recently because he was wearing black socks under his long pants. Technically against the rules of the particular course, but rather silly and probably ought to be changed considering that you're not likely to notice the color of somebody's socks when wearing long pants.

It isn't even whataboutism, because the umpire in question is very consistent when it comes to the enforcement of rules re men and women. And while you might think that someone would have advised her to retract her accusation, voices of reason are nowhere to be found in her camp.

And so, the tennis queen's new clothes are magnificently majestic -- or else!

The last few posts have been oddly readable. Shouldn't we play it safe and go back to shoving our posts through a word scrambler?

That's more or less what whataboutism is, her supporters are asking whatabout those other people, which isn't relevant to the question of what the rules is and whether or not she broke the rule.

It is an important thing to discuss as it seems rather penny ante, but that's the rule and she's being paid a ton of money to play the game.

But in this case it's a baseless assumption, so it might be more accurate to call it delusion.

The Japanese player clearly has her number, but rather than accept defeat graciously as a champion, Serena plays the victim of "white oppression" and has a tantrum, and the WTA is going along for the ride.

I guess strong female role models are out. o.O
