darthspudius: did anyone mention Mortal Kombat?
I didn't really find the first one bad. The second one, on the other hand...

ReynardFox: Am I alone in liking Wild Wild West? I know it's complete crap, It barely understands steampunk or the TV series it was derived from... but c'mon, giant mecha spider ftw.
I love Kenneth Branagh in this one. Branagh is one of my favourite actors (and directors), he is a truly great dramatic actor, and it's so much fun just watching him in such a silly role in such a silly movie. It's comedy gold.

As for movies so bad they are fun to watch I think the Deathstalker tetralogy is a must-see. It's crazy fun. Starts as a low budget Conan rip-off, ang goes into complete fantasy insanity. I still think Army of Darkness was inspired by Deathstalker 2.

PaterAlf: ARTE (a Franco-German TV network) aired it some years ago. They had a trash movie series at that time which is quite funny, because normally they are known for quality television and intellectual programs.

And here is another movie that I enjoyed when I saw it at my local cinema one or two years ago:

Zombies from Outer Space
I watch ARTE on satellite TV, and I would have never guessed that it would air such a film.

Zombies from Outer Space is indeed quite the silly fun.

It's impressive just how much of an unsalvagable train wreck Mortal Kombat Annihilation is, it not only fails at everything it's trying to do, but does so in such spectacular fashion it's hard to believe it wasn't deliberate. As a fan of the original I saw this one in cinemas and honestly felt embarrassed to be watching it, especially when it reached that "CG as good as backyard stop-motion" animality battle near the end.

That said, I can easily watch this one today just to laugh at the sheer ineptitude.

Yeah, seeing a serious actor actively embrace such an obviously ridiculous role like Loveless makes all the difference, it's why I love Jeremy Irons in D&D. When you know they are aware it's schlock, but they're going in determined to have fun and make it memorable schlock.

I've never seen the Deathstalker series, but having it compared to Army of Darkness makes me want to check it out.

You want a bad film, then watch this.

Now that you're thoroughly confused, let me explain. This is a musical from 1980 that tells the story of two small-town musicians getting sucked into the music business in the future dystopia of 1994 where the top music company somehow rules the world. There's a mess of symbolism and thinly veiled allegories present through the entire thing, like the way the head of the evil music company is clearly the Devil, and it ends with the most literal case of Deus ex Machina in recent history. It does it all in pure '80s style that is hypnotically awful yet entertaining. Last time I checked it was on Netflix.

Wishbone: Starship Troopers is a bad movie, but in a good way (are you not entertained?). Precisely the sort of guilty pleasure this thread is about.
avatar
F4LL0UT: In my opinion it's a brilliant but almost universally misunderstood film. It physically hurts me when I see people mistake its clearly intentional trashiness and cheesiness for regular movie badness.
My sentiment exactly, Starship Troopers is satire of the finest. The problem with satire of the finest is that it's so unflinchingly straightforward that many will miss out on it being satire entirely - because satire doesn't try to be funny. I don't know how many young people joined the military after seeing that movie but I'm quite sure the number is high.

On the technical side, the movie is just as excellent. The CGI effects are convincing and still look better than most films released today. Soundtrack, costumes, props, design, everything is top notch.

Are you kidding? As much as I loved it, it was definitely tacky as all hell.

No kidding at all. It might be flawed, but I wouldn't call it bad. If Mortal Kombat 1 is considered a bad movie then, holy shit, have I seen worse crap than that.

I didn't say it wasn't enjoyable but you re-watch that and see how low budget that shit was lol.

Reminds of the last transformers film. I took the kids in to see it with the impression it was the worst of the year and we had an absolute blast. Those films are great fun but considered garbage. Now I can easily say I have seen many MANY more films that are well below those Bay movies in terms of enjoyability or creativity.

To be honest i think it's very much on the tightrope. It's more ambiguous than mere satire, it's more like high self-awareness, almost a hommage to heroic war movies but without their naivety and 'innocence'. Like, "we want to do a badass heroic war movie but we are too intelligent to have the required beliefs for that, so, let's be transparent about the silliness that the codes imply".

In other words, i find it closer to WH40000 than to a pure satire. Satire focuses on "it's dumb". WH40000 and Starship Trooper sound more like "dumbness is the door to coolness, let's not hide that".
I just remember that Critters 3 (the debut of Leonardo diCaprio?) was quite enjoyable.

Those films are brilliant! So pointless and silly. Should show those to the kids. :D

jdsgn: Lost Boys 2 The Tribe. If possible, watch German version.

And everything from Steven Seagal. I love this guy.

ElTerprise: What's with the german version?
The voicing perfectly underlines the whole awfulness :'D
Birdemic: Shock and Terror. One bad film to rule them all! Seriously if you haven't seen it yet then you're missing out on something truly awesombad. I've seen a lot of interviews with the creator/director and the actors and they're hilarious. You can't make movies this bad if you try. It comes from the directors pure ineptitude and lack of anything resembling writing or directing skills. It's just a gift he was born with....or without but makes this movie go way beyond the "it's so bad it's good" label. Watch it with a lot of friends and a lot of alcohol. You're in for something.....special? lol.
