SusurrusParadox: snip
(Since allegedly this is all about ethics in videogame journalism rather than harassing individual women.)
Brasas: I keep trying to discuss ethics of objectivity in journalism and society, but no one answers when it gets interesting and complex enough. And I'm not even a gator. Will you play with me? Pretty please? It's hard to have a debate when the other side doesn't show up... :(
Personally, I blame the corporations involved in creating/applying the pressures and corrupt practices.
(ie: Not the journalists.)
Also, I mean, they're videogames journalists.
They're generally not that highly paid, so the 'perks' of going to cool shows and being shown/given stuff to play with are about it as far as I'm aware.
They also (hopefully) enjoy at least some games, so I'm not even looking for that much objectivity in videogames journalism. Mainly what I'd be interested in is "What's it like? Give detailed answer." & "Would I want this?" as well as the odd "Okay so what's coming up & which companies are doing what now?".
... which tbh the old 'corrupt' form did. If I wanted honest reviews (seriously, who the fuck goes to videogames journalism of any form for honest assessments of quality) then I'd browse for discussion forums or the like.
Somewhere where would-be fans and actual players of the games share their opinion, at least some of which are likely to include detailed answers as to any bugs or cool features.
(In short: "Is it fun or at least very interesting?", which is the key question for any game or.. art in general, I suppose.)
So honestly the whole shitstorm arising out of what seemed to have been an extremely unhealthy relationship (on both sides) is just... nah.
On top of that the allegedly ethical Gamergate group seem to fairly regularly engage in sexist/homophobic/transphobic shit, which is just bloody disappointing.
(Granted some of them are at least trying to present a face of "Honestly, we're not bigots. BUT GET YOUR DAMN REPRESENTATION AND EQUALITY AND STUFF OUT OF OUR GAMES" when.. y'know, there are enough games to go around really?)
Quit pissing and moaning and getting so damn OFFENDED that people don't like being disregarded, disrespected, & generally marginalised.
They're fucking videogames, for fuck's sake. They're supposed to be harmless fucking fun!
Instead of taking fucking shots at various people for (from the GG perspective) having a 'misguided' sense of justice, try just playing a fucking videogame.
Try considering that more diverse videogames aren't actually the end of the world because it means MORE GAMES and MORE STORIES and MORE STUFF.
(It also means not unnecessarily hurting people. Which, I mean, why the fuck would any ethical person want that? It's a shitty thing to do. Don't fuckin' do it.)
Jesus fucking Christ on a stick, I am so damn sick of the same damn stories being trotted out year after year.
Every so often something cool comes along with a new thing and then it gets run into the damn ground and mimicked to death or it somehow gets completely disregarded and fades into obscurity.
Or its like is just never seen again for some ridiculous reason.
Idk. Like, I love videogames. They're fuckin' great. Interactive stories (I have a preference for RPGs and the like), with (supposed-to-be) fun things to do!
But sometimes the fucking 'fandom' just saddens me.
Like, I expect that sort of behaviour from young teens that haven't learned shit yet.
By like.. 25, people should know enough to not spout off aggressive/disrespectful shit at relative strangers and just generally conduct themselves with some basic human decency.
(Really, what does one LOSE by having more people enjoy games & feel comfortable playing games? Unless you're actually one of the mythical fucking loners that dwells in a basement and loathes the idea of like.. sharing, and enjoying multiplayer stuff.)
I suppose the summary is:
PLAY YER FUCKIN' GAMES.
With the subtitle of:
EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE EXPERIENCES OF OTHER HUMANS AND TRY NOT TO BE A FUCKIN' DICK ABOUT IT.
