RWarehall: I wouldn't be so sure. Even in the States, there have been efforts to ban and censor. Many books are already banned from school libraries in some states. Movies can essentially be forced to censor their content. (Else release in almost no theatres as an adult movie). The PMRC tried to get a Dead Kennedys album banned for pornography using the laws of the state of California. (The PMRC started as 4 politician's wives). The FCC levies serious fines to broadcast TV. Broadcast radio, with many stations now being owned by one company Clearchannel, have already de facto censored certain music by leaving it off the "acceptable" play lists due to content. And none of this precludes actions as occurred in Australia where interest groups petition chain stores to quit carrying a certain product. Already, some museums have been forced not to exhibit certain works because of citizen protest. Or God forbid, some state chooses to take action and ban sales. I seem to recall certain state legislatures which at least discussed banning certain games after school shootings.
I think you should be more careful what you consider to be "tinfoil hat" phenomena.
Edit: And let me add for example...
https://www.aclu.org/blog/free-speech/freedom-game Yes I've read and/or heard that story about comics somewhere, it's tragic what happened to comics in the '50s. Unfortunately it seems gaming is already headed down that same direction. When they're trying to put warning labels on games that tell people "
WARNING: Exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior" as tho it is a health warning on a pack of cigarettes - which is the connection it will induce in peoples minds - it means they're trying to depict gamers and gaming as some sort of public health risk that needs to be brought under the tightest of gov't regulations. It means gamers are already in serious trouble.
There's a good PBS article linked from the ACLU article that looks at myths about gamers and does a good job mythbusting quite a few of the false tropes thrown around by the anti-gaming crowd. Its good to see this type of calm logical and
honest presentation in the media for a change. Unfortunately what is being made popular by msm (main stream media) is the unsubstantiated declaritive statements variety of commentary personified by the ubiquitous Ms. Sarkesian.
Hopefully in the future more articles like this will go mainstream, but it seems unlikey. Which leaves we the people in the position of having to keep on fighting the fight at the grass roots level and -
I know this upsets some people but it needs to be said - to keep speaking truth to power.
