Jonesy89: Yeah, I read that article, and not once were games mentioned as something that the government wanted to target. They did talk about targeting death threats and the like, which are already quite illegal and are not considered (well, here in the States, at least) to be protected speech. So yes, it is, at least based on this article, still quite in tin foil hat territory to go on about them going after games, when all they are talking about is cracking down on already illegal shit.

RWarehall: I wouldn't be so sure. Even in the States, there have been efforts to ban and censor. Many books are already banned from school libraries in some states. Movies can essentially be forced to censor their content. (Else release in almost no theatres as an adult movie). The PMRC tried to get a Dead Kennedys album banned for pornography using the laws of the state of California. (The PMRC started as 4 politician's wives). The FCC levies serious fines to broadcast TV. Broadcast radio, with many stations now being owned by one company Clearchannel, have already de facto censored certain music by leaving it off the "acceptable" play lists due to content. And none of this precludes actions as occurred in Australia where interest groups petition chain stores to quit carrying a certain product. Already, some museums have been forced not to exhibit certain works because of citizen protest. Or God forbid, some state chooses to take action and ban sales. I seem to recall certain state legislatures which at least discussed banning certain games after school shootings.

I think you should be more careful what you consider to be "tinfoil hat" phenomena.

Edit: And let me add for example...

I was speaking about the article itself, as it was cited to show that belief that 'they are coming for our games and then they are coming for us' is not paranoid. Given that the article completely fails to mention games being a target in any way, shape, or form of the government, it completely fails to do so.

Calm down, he was confused about something I wrote and I provided a a quick explanation and a Wikipedia link. It's called providing clarification. It's not like I turned the thread into a discussion about the Byzantine Empire or anything.

Yes I've read and/or heard that story about comics somewhere, it's tragic what happened to comics in the '50s. Unfortunately it seems gaming is already headed down that same direction. When they're trying to put warning labels on games that tell people "WARNING: Exposure to violent video games has been linked to aggressive behavior" as tho it is a health warning on a pack of cigarettes - which is the connection it will induce in peoples minds - it means they're trying to depict gamers and gaming as some sort of public health risk that needs to be brought under the tightest of gov't regulations. It means gamers are already in serious trouble.

There's a good PBS article linked from the ACLU article that looks at myths about gamers and does a good job mythbusting quite a few of the false tropes thrown around by the anti-gaming crowd. Its good to see this type of calm logical and honest presentation in the media for a change. Unfortunately what is being made popular by msm (main stream media) is the unsubstantiated declaritive statements variety of commentary personified by the ubiquitous Ms. Sarkesian.

Hopefully in the future more articles like this will go mainstream, but it seems unlikey. Which leaves we the people in the position of having to keep on fighting the fight at the grass roots level and - I know this upsets some people but it needs to be said - to keep speaking truth to power.

HiPhish: The only thing they have accomplished is putting big boobs into video games.
I think I could get on board with a secret organization devoted to big boobs :)
In the category : "stupid controversies of the week" :

Apparently there is a thing called "National Cleavage Day" (yes apparently it does exists :) ) and Lionhead decided to joke on it by Tweeting some Fable artwork of a well endowed woman holding beer mugs....

http://www.gamezone.com/news/lionhead-tweets-in-celebration-of-national-cleavage-day-internet-freaks-out-3414656
https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/4004/31052712.0/0_1039d9_bac28fd9_orig

...and of course "some" (including some of the usual suspect) started a shit-storm on Twitter until Lionhead had to remove the tweet and apologize for it.

The second one is about Pillars of Eternity... some backer put the following quote in the game (If was a reward for one of the pledge) :

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CBRBNUzW8AAl4Kb.png:large

And apparently some decided that it was "trans phobic" and asked for it to be removed immediately or else; Josh Sawyer said on twitter he was looking into it. AFAIK no confirmation yet if Obsidian will censor it or not.

Sigh... that would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic...

You're right, it is pathetic that this backer thought the existence of trans people was something to make a nasty, unfunny 'joke' about, and that the developers indulged him.

Most men dread the moment when someone who looks like and advertises as a girl turns out to have a winky in a certain situation. ;)
It's a joke about false advertising.

Where's the problem?

The problem is in basing a 'joke' on an offensive and oppressive analogy that likens a woman's right to exist to "false advertising".

There are still people even in the modern western world which primarily connect "vagina" with "woman" and "penis" with "man".
Crazy stuff, I know. It's some sort of relic from a time when most people actually wanted to at least try to reproduce.

Today we are far more advanced and don't let simple biological facts get in our way. ;)

May I know where you did see something about trans people hate or villifying in that light-hearted poem ? Except in your own mind maybe ?

Do you really think that the average reasonable trans person would appreciate being infantilized by paranoïd twitter morons offended by everything that doesn't please their narrow views?

Being "light-hearted" doesn't automatically make something OK.

I'm a dolphin and I don't care for your speciesist point of view calling me a human, because it is wrong!
