What a way to go down... And what a boring match.

My second team (Portugal) also was defeated yesterday. Who should I root for now?

tinyE: That was some of the most boring play by Spain I have ever seen.

Two hours of standing outside the penalty box passing the ball back & forth.
Really!? It was the usual possession is everything so we keep passing the ball between the centre backs and the defensive midfielder for almost 130 minutes. I'm glad that that's over. And the most important thing: Ramos is out.

Linko90: Every team has gotten away with it. They rarely use VAR for shirt holding and the like. Same issue in the FA cup last season
avatar
wpegg: But they did use VAR, it was there, it was blatant, and they were still cleared by VAR.
What I'm saying is they'll rarely give the decision.

Which is silly - a foul's a foul. They're not there to modify or smooth over decisions they are there to correct them. Anything else, whether "what happens" or not is only an indication of a broken system. VAR hasn't been used long enough to establish precedent on what should happen regarding original decisions, and hopefully it won't go the way of cricket where we get a video replay showing it was out, but for some reason the umpires decision matters about that.

Right now it should be absolute "Judge Dredd" style "I am the law!". They've got all the tech after all (except the High Ex ammo).

Absolutely not. Have you seen that the VARs did in the Bundesliga? Utter garbage. The VAR should change as little as possible, i.e. only intervene on a clear mistake by the referee. And that was not a clear mistake.

Yup. Watching Spain play was about as exciting as watching paint dry.
This match was some kind of dejavu... Argentina - Iceland?

A fouls a foul hasn't applied in a long time now, see any top tier match or league. Defenders are literally running out of options these days purely down to poor officials and constant pushes for players to dive (more often than not if they don't dive they don't get anything, even if it was a foul). Human factors are always gonna be there, VAR's just a tool, not the decision maker

We were spoiled from Uganda yesterfday flying all over the field with their asses on fire.
That was the end of the great Spain sides of Ramos,Iniesta & Silva. They were the leftovers from the Euro 2008 winners that started it all.

Yeah it's their fault Russia parked the bus in front of their goal. But i do blame Spain for choking the ball with endless passes (1137 to be precise) and not risking more. Also Russia only 6 goal attempts for 120 minutes, 5 in the first half.

Hopefully we'll get more excitement with Croatia - Denmark match. Croatia showed best team play in group stage and Denmark hasn't lost a match in previous 18 games. Should be interesting. :p

Once the referee invokes VAR it should be 100%. VAR was invoked, and it should give the fairest result possible. I don't subscribe to the "everyone fouls a bit" logic, it's just giving more room to players breaking the game. Right now we see shameless rugby tackles in the area because they are aware that even with VAR they are bulletproof. If the Russian player hadn't accidentally backfooted the goal, that tackle would have been ignored, that's not football.
Cool, Russia won - congratulations!

Siegor: And all my 3 favourite teams are down (Portugal, Germany and Spain). Oh well at least we still have Belgium, Denmark, England and France representing Europe.
Because Croatia doesn't count?
